I'm having lasik surgery - on the sheet they gave me it says no individual sports for 1 week afterwards
i doubt this includes running... anybody have lasik and gone running within a couple of days?

I had it done a year ago, one of the best things I've ever done.
I was told no exercise for two weeks, but on questioning the surgeon he said it was because you have to let the eyes heal, which means no rubbing of them. So the reason for the 'no exercise rule' is partly because exercise results in sweat, which makes you liable to rub your eyes. So from that point of view, you can still go running as long as you're careful. Obviously any contact sports, racket sports and swimming can be more harmful but purely running, not in my experience.
Enjoy the new lease of life!
it's just 1 week. dont risk your eyes for that
Well you just can't let anything get in your eye if you do run. I didn't take any time off at all and I run 110 mile weeks. I just made sure i wore the space goggles they gave me. I really didn't care how goofy I looked, at least I was running. The no running thing is just a precaution. So run on my friend.
I ran the next day. Just wear sunglasses and don't wipe sweat out of your eyes.... and hope you don't get a bug in your eyes as well. Just don't let your hands anywhere near your eyes.

Don't run. How much fitness will you lose in a week? Are you paid to run? An Olympian? How much did you pay for the lasik? The sweat, dust, potential to fall or jar your eyes are the reason why you need to carve out a VERY SMALL segment of your running routine. Just let them heal and stop being such an anal retentive runner.

Dude, DON'T listen to any of these NON-DOCTORS tell you what you can and can't do. Listen to YOUR doctor. If he says don't exercise for a week, then don't. Suppose you go running two days after but for a reason other than the fact you went running, a problem develops. If you DON'T go running, they need to fix the problem or make it right somehow. If you DO go running, then they've got reason to not fix the problem or avoid a lawsuit if you actually have cause for one.
If you talk to your doctor and he says it's fine to go running, then do so. Otherwise, don't.
that is not a bad idea (wearing the space goggles)...i don't know if i'll run the next day but i may take a light jog two days afterwards if everything is fine... i'll run it by the doctorif I honestly thought there was a possibility of something happening to me as a result of running of course I wouldn't run but you will always have risk... yes I could fall running or something, i could also trip down the stairs or slip on dog crap on the sidewalkanway, i appreciate all of the thoughts

I ran 4 day spost mine and had no problems. Just keep using the re-wetting drops!!!!

so messing up your vision is a risk equal to falling on your butt?
no, i think some people were referring to risk being that i would fall while running soon after the surgery and that would mess with my eyes

only in america do we sit on our asses watch drug commercials, and then go TELL our doctors what we need.
or we go to message boards for a "second opinion".
seriously just dumb. there are real reasons he told you to wait a week, just because abunch of random nobodies you dont even know decided to ignore their doctors and didnt suufer ill effect.
jesus, your not supposed to drive drunk, i know lots of people who do,none of them are dead...YET..but i would never do so my self.
I got lasered several summers ago. One of the smartest things I've ever done. Take the days off running and for the rest of the summer take a lift out of the sand traps if you golf. My buddies still complain about the "laser lift" and it's been 6 summers since I've taken one!
i'm not in america

Actually I think you can gain a lot from hearing what other people in similiar situations have experienced. Of course you have to be careful how you apply it to your situation. I was told by doctors to quit running when I was 16 because of a problem with the ball of my foot. Since then I've run the equivalent to twice around the globe. Glad I didn't listen in that case. Very often doctors give advice for average non-athletic people that may not apply to runners. In this case however I agree to follow the eye surgeons recommendations.
you my not be an american... but your a dumbass if you think some ransom mrons opinion is as valuable as a doctors .
nice, the way you wrote that really gives your statement some legitimacyand who said i was giving anyone's statements as much weight as my doctor's in fact if you read my post, all i got was the basic sheet that said "No individual sports for 1 week" - I thought others might have ran, was interested in hearing if they had and so if they had I might press the issue with the doctor when i see him on surgery day - a clarification of the basic sheet statementcan you please go back to elementary school now?

and just wanted to point out this is actually wrong toothe conversation went'only in america'i said, 'i'm not in america',to which you said 'you my not be an american'Fact: I am an american, I do not live in america, inconceivable I know

The other thing I'll point out is that after you have the surgery you will naturally be super paranoid about anyone come close to your eyes so in all likelihood won't even want to run for a couple of days. I found the test they do a couple of days before where they dilute your pupils much worse than the actual surgery and I am no tough guy! I kept thinking if it's good enough for Tiger Woods...
I am near sighted, so I don't need any glasses for reading, (yes, I'm over 40), but I need them for anything 5 feet away or more. My ? is: if I get lasik for my near sightedness, will I then have to use reading glasses and most older people do, who have good vision? I don't want to trade one set of glasses for another. What's the point in that. I do need to read very small print on maps for my job, too, and spend alot of time on the computer.
