you're not supposed to race all out during base phase, right?
if i did one 10k hard this summer(in midjune), would that be enough to mess up my base phase?

summer base phase is to give you a chance to recover mind and body from last season. It is also an opportunity to het some speedwork sessions under your belt ready for new season, this could be reps, fartlek etc. Good steady runs to maintain fitness levels.
A hard 10k race once will not do that much damage, use it to maintain motivation and test time achieved., plus chance to get the adreniline going in a race again!
How do you "mess up a base phase"?
bump
i dont c a problem racing one time in june and one time in july...as long as u dont over due it, it wont hurt anything.
im having a kid run a 10k in june and a 5k at the beginning of july and another at the end of july. those are his 3 hard workouts for the summer the rest is just building. dont think it will hurt you if u race 2-3-4 times
what pace should that 10k be at?
is it ok to go for a pr and run hard?
what about if you plan on running like 4 or 5 4ks?
I mean its only a 4k....
also, I'm gonna be in the GMR...
but thats ok right?
It also depends on how enthusiastic the summer training goes. If they skip a workout or two during the week, which is nearly, unfortunately, always the case, the nencourage them to run a race on Saturday mornings and run hard for 5K and maybe a couple of open cc meets. (9 weeks, maybe 4 races)
The biggest drawback to that is cost. Rides to races.
Things like that. You try to insure that they meet the summer mileage goals, but two out of three do not, they may come fairly close, so, throw in a few more hard races.
I try to get them to do all strength work though with no interval type stuff at all.Tempos, fartleks and low key small burg races. They get boat loads of intervals between August 13th and November.
It's just keepin em interested that's the trick.
are you in hs or college?
when i was in college, we had a guy who raced quite a bit during the summer - mostly 5ks(~6 or 2 per month), he was a stud the first 3 meets, then he ran ok for a meet, then the well was empty when it really counted.
for hs, whatever keeps you motivated over the summer - i'd say go for it - seems like most hs guys have a hard time getting off of the sofa or out from behind the playstation. college is a different story, where you have a long season, longer races, the races are more intense and a really long year, but hopefully you can de-emphasize indoor.
