At what smaller D1 / D2 schools can a sub 1:56 guy get anything close to a free ride? Names please.
Thanks.

Sandoval will NEVER develop an athlete as good as Lincoln or Craig.
I'm serious. I hope after Alysia Johnson wins the 800 that flotrack interviews Sandoval. Then you will really see how clueless this guy is.

Lincoln was a walk-on, slap.
Wait, I thought walks on never developed? Nevermind, just on Sandoval's team they don.t

You are clueless.
AJ has dropped over 7 seconds from when she won the CIF State Meet just 3 years ago.

The morons on this message board that don't have a life and feel that Coach Sandoval kept them from living their "Dan Lincoln-esque" dream can't even begin to answer your question.
It hurts too much.

Very true.
And the people that are pissing and moaning about Cal's lack of attention to holding the hands of "walk-ons" just don't want to ACCEPT THE FACT of what you jus posted above.
Remember, Arkansas literally won a 2003 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP with only two runners . . . by the names of Dan Lincoln and Alistair Cragg. These two distance guys accounted for something like 40 points of their team's total points!
Now, is a coach like John Mc Donough going to focus on specialized training for elite scholarship athletes such as Lincoln or Cragg that can help win him a title as Arkansas proved in its streak of supremacy from 1992-1999 or is McDonough gonna instead, spend his time trying to develop "walk-ons" that are a 90:1 longshot of making the NCAA's?
The answer is not just readily apparent.
It is based in historical Fact.
Nice call there "Razorbcak Champ." It is obvious that you are very well-informed in regards to the college scene. I'm glad that this "McDonough" guy wasn't wasting his time with walk-ons! He must have let John McDonnell coach the walk-ons like...umm...err...Dan Lincoln?!?!

A sub 1:56 guy who has the academic skills to get into Cal could get close to a full ride (half academic scholarship, half athletic scholarship)at pretty much ANY non-"prestigious" D2 school and many smaller, less-competitive D1s as well.
I feel bad for Giliat Ghebray, an extremely talented and hard-working distance runner. Ran horribly in the 5K semis yesterday (not making the final).
This guy should've been winning national titles during his time at Cal, but Sandoval who is apparently such a grand "middle distance" coach RUINED HIM.
He ran 13:42 this year, but come time for nationals, nada.
I predict that Ghebray does MUCH better in his post-collegiate career (a la Peter Gilmore). Mr. Ghebray, the further away from Sandoval you get, the better. Best of luck.

A 1:56 guy isn't gonna place in a D1 conference meet and he won't even be in the Top 80 in the nation in D2!
Stop fooling yourselves and do your homework.
Trackshark has the 39th D2 guy at 1:52.90
Get REAL people!

You are a moron.
Were you even at the NCAA's last night?
Apparently Not, but that won't stop you from taking another ignorant pot-shot at Sandoval.
Gil fell badly in his race and was essentially out of the competition from that point on, having to regroup after he lost contact witih the pack.
But according to you, it's Tony's fault that Gil fell.
(rolling his eyes)
1:56 (or even a little lower) in junior year (recruiting year) of HIGH SCHOOL!!!
Once you get in college, you improve! Ever heard of running faster in college than you did in HS (and making the trackshark D2 lists)?
At UC Berkeley, this idea of improving in college might be the exception and not the norm, but still.
Get REAL dude!

Ghebray actually lost his shoe in the middle of the race right after he took the lead and started to pick up the pace. He stopped to put it back on. The pace slowed back down and he was able to catch the pack within about 60 meters, but that had to hurt him when it came time to kick.
wait so did he fall or lose his shoe? are the cal people exaggerating?
Daniel Sikiric. State champ in high school. 1:51 800 runner. On scholarship at Cal.
Coached by Sandoval.

Yep, but the "haters" would have you believe that it was Sandoval that cost Ghebray the race.
Why don't some of you "walk-on" distance geek "dreamers" take your vendetta elsewhere. Perhaps you could roast USC's Ron Alice over the coals because Big Bad 'SC doesn't even field a mens x-country team.
Some of you really need to get a life.

And as far as being school specific, I don't think that CAL is all alone in their lack of attention towards the "walk-on". Just look at UCLA. They get a ton of "walk-ons" every single year, and most of these kids simply fall by the wayside.
Don't mean to change the subject, but the UCLA coach isn't know for being the greatest either. I hear he drunk dials his athletes.
Hey speaking of Ghebray falling in the 5k. Didn't James Robinson fall in a heat of his 880 and not make the final?
James Robinson turned out to be pretty good!
Anyway just thought I'd throw down some old time stuff.
Now, lets see, James Robinson ran for Cal in 74 and 75?
I think they were running the half (880 yards) in those days.
ANYWAY-WE GOT THE POINT..HUFFIN'S STUFF SUCKS AND THEY ARE HISTORY AFTER THE NCAA'S..WHO IS GOING TO BE THE NEXT COACH AT CAL??????????????ANYBODY HAS A CLUE IN HERE?
It's a joke that these Cal people keep defending "coach" Sandoval. As a former coach of an athlete in the Cal program it's frustrating to see development stagnate and others that he dominated in high school go to other programs and thrive. It's not the athletes fault, it's the fact that Sandoval either can't or doesn't care to develop distance runners.
I maybe be wrong but I think Cal's top 800 meter runner is a walk on?
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
