If you are already asking then you have no chance to be the best.
work the hardest. thats a start.
Good answer,
bage of time, committment, determination and hard work.
A good coach is a bonus. Stay focused on your training/running. Be patient start off slowly eg 30 miles per week and build up to 70 by fall. Never give in and put loads of effort and enjoy running! remember train hard but train smart-listen to your mind and body and rest if needed.
Good luck on your journey in athletics!

37 year old xc coach for senior mens team at local athletics club. Been running since age of 13. still rum 50+ miles per week and do occasional 5 and 10 k races.Still enjoy running and coaching others to reach their potential.
One thing that helps is to surround yourself with those who have succeeded in the sport, or those who have the same drive as you. Finding a good club is a start as it is always easier to bring the best out of yourself when people around you have a common purpose.
Hard work can make you good, but only talent combined with hard work can make you the best. However, you need to try the hard work first to see if you might have the talent.

Come on. Build on to 70 miles? Maybe if he wants to be the best JV runner at his college. he wants to be THE BEST.
agree as team mates help and support each other. Have a common aim or goal to work for. Friendship and track banter helps. They also push you on and make each other work harder. You are not alone on those long runs or cold wet hills on training nights in tights!
Get to the club and discover for yourself!
Get up to 100+ miles per week. 90% of great distance runners well...run a lot.
Do drink or do drugs.
Have a good support system. Very individual. For some people this means having a supportive team, family, girlfriend, coach, etc. For others it means just a coach. Are you a loaner or do you need to be part of a team? Find out what works.
Make sure you are getting enough of required nutrients.
Get enough sleep.
Stay focused.
CONSISTANCY above all else.
100 MPW is not the magic bullet, especially for a young guy whose history we do not know. 70 is plenty for someone 18. You cannot become your best in one summer. Think four years, not four months. No shortcuts. Eventually, yeah, maybe 100 MPW will be part of this picture.
Chef is right. 100 isn't a magic number. It's a ballpark figure that the majority of good and great distance runners hit. Done correctly that amount of running will make you a better distance runner than if you ran 70 MPW period. Don't be afraid but don't be stupid, like Chef said we don't know your history.
Sorry, meant to say Chet.
