They are both 21-28.
So much for buying a pennant.

I hope the Democrats win the White House because they'll force Steinbrenner to dismantle his team and turn the money over to crack mothers in Brooklyn.
That's the bad news for the Yankees. The worse news is a team like the Devil Rays are young and have talent to develop. The Yankees have almost none.
takes alot to buy all that steriods
It's always interesting to look at payrolls.
In Boston for instance, this year J.D. Drew will make more than David Ortiz. And Matt Clement makes $9.5 million this year as opposed to Matzuzaka who makes $6.5 million. I guess the Sox still owe Clement money.
And what does Jonathan Papelbon make?? A whopping $425,000. Joel Piniero is making $4 million for crying out loud.
last years AL MVP makes < 400k a year. i think the yankees payroll has 4 guys making near or above 20million per. i didn't look it up but i know it's in that ballpark.
I used to actually like baseball. It's so damn boring though. I'd rather watch race walking.
contracts are all about what have you done in the past not what are you going to do in the future. As for Tampa Bay, they will never be good. They won't pay their talent so all these young future stars will be stars for different teams probably the Yankees.

They won their division the last nine years, so it worked for a while.

Then you were never a baseball fan to begin with.
Any of those Yankees want to invest in some pit bulls????

and the Yankees will finish at least 20 games ahead of the D-Rays and likely make the playoffs. The Yankees will also continue to be a contender year in and year out as the D-rays insist on crying poor and refuse to make a committment to their team or their fans.
your argument makes a lot more sense when talking about teams that spend a ton of $$ and have nothing to show for it (see the Knicks, TrailBlazers, etc).
The Yanks spend a lot of dough and put a great product on the field. No shame in that. And please, I know the Yanks are struggling, but let's not write them off just yet. They're like 7 or 8 games out of the wild card race with 113 to go. Thats nothing.
Who has been to the playoffs more?
thaaaaaaa Yankees Suck!
They are a poorly constructed team -
Too many Defensive liabilites - Giambi, Damon, Posada.
Abreu and Cano have decided to play shty in the field and are slumping at the plate. They have no speed on the bases. Jeter isn't a base stealer and Cano can't get on. Everyone else is Dean K slow. They can't manufacuter runs. Arod strikes out too much to hit and run. Torre isn't smart enough to play NL ball thats why he sucked as Mets manager.
The 3-5 spots in their rotation are sht and their pen sucks.
Damon can't run b/c of injury and could never throw - why isn't he Dhing? Giambi is worthless in the field.
1 steriod pumping fatf isn't going to change sht. Even if the yankees win every clemmens start its only 20 wins max. They are 13 games back right now! Boston is playing great!
They are losing more frequently now than ever!
Pavano is done for the year! great 40 mil contract - they got 19 uninspired starts!
They haven't won a world series since 2000! And ever since all they talk about is winning world series and that the season isn't a success if they don't. Cashman should have been fired along time ago.

True. And I don't believe for a minute the Yankees are out of it. 2 years ago the Astros were 18-32 at this point in the season and they made it to the World Series.
But, I do believe the Yankees have paid too much for too many players who are past their prime.
This is actually a good analysis. As a season ticketholder, I'm 100% in favor of cutting Damon, Abreau, Farnsworth, Mussina, Pavano, Giambi. Just let them go.
It's an inevitable NY cycle. You catch lightning with great chemistry and then overpay to sustain. People lament the Yankee drought of the 80's and early 90's but fail to recognize they were the winningest team of the 80's. It's just that they plodded along with talented guys but had little chemistry.
Everyone forgets the Yankees were the winningest team of the 80's. They won in the late 70's through a series of trades and a big free agent or two. (Reggie/Catfish). Then they tried to sustain with overpriced guys that really didn't care about the team.
Same story in the mid to late 90's. Win with chemistry. But while they continue to make the playoffs and will likely revert to better form soon. (Especially if Hughes, Clemens are pitching every 5 days.) They aren't much of a team and I don't see a world series with this squad.
No the Astros were in crap division and had a better team
The Yankees are a bad team and in a good division. They are not better than Boston and Boston's lead is 13!
They are not better than the second best AL Central teams - Tigers or Indians.
woah woah woah!
Regarding defensive liabilities; defense is the least of the Yankees problems right now. They haven't been great in the field, but this team needs to bats to wake up and all will be fine.
I'll agree that the rotation is weak at 4 and 5, but they have 3 solid starters now in Mussina, Pettitte and Wang, with Clemens on the way.
As for Torre not being smart enough to play NL ball, that's just ridiculous! What's so difficult about managing in the NL? Any second grader could figure out how to implement to tactical double-switch, so don't give me that.
The Yankees will most likely not catch the Red Sox, but so what. They'll still give themselves a great shot at the playoffs.
And Pavano is a loser. Agreed.
Great shot at the playoffs? Not likely. It is wishful thinking to believe that the ChiSox, Tigers, Indians, and Mariners will all collapse and open the door for New York. Mussina and Petitte are showing age, Wang hasn't been 100% and likely won't regain form this season, the bullpen can't protect leads and no one fears Mo Rivera any longer.
The offense still produces runs but not in clutch situations or late innings. The defense is atrocious. A-Rod is Mr. April and just run-of-the-mill now and eyeing a bigger contract in Anaheim next year despite his "I Love New York" quotes.
Clemens? He could go either way. Right now he is baffling minor league kids with a mediocre fastball and a few breaking pitches. Big league batters will figure out his change-up quickly. I predict he goes 6-6 / 4.XXX ERA with a lot of no decisions thanks to the Yankee pen.
Cashman and Torre canned in October after missing the playoffs. Good luck next season Joe Girardi.
