This question could be read to be in the "what clique were you in during high school" genre.
But I assume that what is wanted is a sense of the personal reactions of Webb and those close to him after his spectacular high school performance. I live in the community and have watched Alan run since 9th grade (an impressive 9:30 two mile as a freshman!).
To Webb and his coach's credit, although thrilled with the time, they sensed then that the race was the result of a number of positive factors (including great pacing with limited expectations about running towards the front) coming together at once, and in that sense he "overperformed". I say this in the sense this is not "gossip" inasmuch as it relates a positive, forward thinking mindset that was impressive when I first heard it and is obviously now bearing fruit.
It is in this vein that I think that his performance this weekend is very, very impressive. Yes, by the clock his effort was "only" 2 and half seconds faster by his high school time - but to run that kind of time in April (3:51) in Des Moines with no competition or help reflects considerable development and maturity on Mr. Webb's part. Scott's record was impressive - the fact that Webb broke it by four seconds in what was essentially a time trial gives some context to the achievement. Good for him - he marched to the beat of his own drum in leaving Michigan - it is working out.
As an aside, I don't understand the negativity on this board. Webb ran a competitive 800 two weeks ago but got beat on tactics (and likely the strength and power of a couple of true 800 meter runners) - hardly unique circumstances in an 800 meter race - and the barbs and jibes here were ridiculous. I read this board and I begin to wonder why it is so many here work so hard to revel in the misery of others - makes it seem like many runners are as compelled to insecurity and jealousy as iron filings are to a magnet.
