It was an early season meet. She was not DQ'ed; they were warning you. The official is basically saying, "There are some coaches in California who are anal about the rules and will file protests for doing what you did. Most likely, I will have to DQ your daughter." The coach that warned you might have had one of his athletes DQ'ed previously and did not want that to happen to you.
Since you now know what could happen, shouldn't you be glad that they warned you and then you will stay in the stands for future races?
Yes, I am glad. I was surprised at their reaction and had a "wtf" look on my face when they came up to me. I was cordial and said "Okay, I understand". I was on the track as my daughter's squad is maybe 12 people total and I help with her distance training. She is the only distance runner on the squad. The coach is the wife of the athletic director and basically stepped in so they would have a program. My background is a CA State Meet finalist in the 70's and a Division II All American in Cross Country in 1979. Her school has no problem with me helping my daughter. Again, I was not causing a commotion, only yelling encouragement as she was close to a PR. Thanks to all of you that answered my original question.
