Well, I just turned 40 recently and have decided to give it another go at running competitively again. (Well see how the old legs hold up after a few years of just maintenance running.) Anyway, My coach in college, Danny Aldridge, took me and a teammate, Mike Stone, up to Eugene for the Prefonataine Classic in "90. Somehow, Aldridge got me in the 10,000 that was set up for an Alberto Salazar comeback race. Needless to say, I got my butt handed to me on a platter in that race, but the fans were awesome and after the race I asked Alberto for his autograph. As I handed him the program and a pen he asked me why I wanted his autograph and told me, you were in the race too. I was so inspired and from that day on I trained at a whole new level and eventually helped my team make it's only appearance at the DII nationals in XC the next season and earned 2 All American certificates later in track.
By the way, Alberto won, Aldridge got 4th and I ended up last, but with Alberto's autograph and the most memorable race I have ever ran in.
By the way, I enjoy these weekly posts and have been waiting to turn 40 to join in the discussions.
