One thing I noticed from this thread is that many of the faster times are correlated with only a small increase in body weight. While some of us enjoy a couple of beers in the evening, I would guess that most of us are more conscious of our diet than we were in high school - I know I was fueled by junk food and Mountain Dew. So it's not surprising that we might actually be in better shape than we were in high school. Add to that a wealth of experience from reading, running and maybe coaching for the 20+ years since high school, and you have some smart, fit runners who have kept the aging process in check and can still crank out some fast miles.
Also, let's not forget that many of us peaked years after HS. I ran 20sec faster for 1500m 10 years after HS, and now I'm slow again, at 45. It's an inverse parabola. Or something like that.
