It worked fairly well for me. I have worked with 3 different coaches at various times (Jim Spivey, Gerard Perlberg, and Paul McMullen) over the past 14 years via email, fax, phone, etc and I had good results. If you need constant attention or a coach calling out splits, yelling at you, etc. then I don't recommend it. If you are disciplined enough to do the workouts on your own and give honest and accurate feedback to your coach, being coached by email, phone, etc. is just as good as a live coach.
Yes totally works if there is good communication on both sides. I have had great coaching from Mike Mittelstaedt before and after I trained under him in Albuquerque NM, also did the long distance coaching thing under Mark Junkermann, and for a short while Darren Dereuck. Now I live with my coach, my husband.... and we both coach athletes long distance, definately can work :O)

Yes can work well, you must have a good line of communication. I suggest keeping an online log that your coach can view.
I am now being coached by Clint Verran Running. Runguru.com. It is a good system. I give them my race schedule, work schedule, PRs and goals. He then makes a 12 week schedule for me. They monitor it via an online running log. Athleticore.com. You just have to be diciplined and not cheat cause you are only cheating yourself.
This is ok if you both understand each others needs and goals.
I missed the social interaction and encouragement when training alone on numerous cold, dark and tiring occasions.
You have to be totally committed and hard working for it to succeed.
I found it tough. Not just lacking encouragement during workouts, but also having somebody there to make an objective decision about completing / extending a workout if I was running real well or struggling.
POSTCOL- Thats what i meant when i said i enter everything in a log and Clint and Jackie monitor it. Make changes in workouts and stuff. If they see me struggling in a workout they will scale back, Or when i was sick they redid that week for me.
