When I was a college frosh, a senior teammate of mine had clawed his way up from being a 9:40 high school two miler to being a 29:15 10k runner and was one of the favorites in XC in our conference. We learned that another school brought in a Kenyan ringer who had run 3:40 and 13:39. Sure enough, at an early meet, there was the Kenyan guy winning the 5 mile race in a time under 24 minutes. I marveled at how easily he ran. I said to the senior teammate "Look at that guy! He's awesome! Kind of unfair he shows up here your senior year though, don't you think?" The teammate said "You fawn over him all you want. You whine all you want. I'm going to try to beat him." Well, he didn't beat him at the conference meet, but he did beat him a couple of times that school year. He also made All-American.
Competition can either make you better or it can make you a scared, whiny little bitch. Like it or not, "uneven playing field" or whatever, you have to go against all the teams in your league. When the meet is over, if you or your team lost, will you be able to say "I've improved this season. We've all improved. We did everything we could do at this meet. I did my part. That other team might have beaten us, but their presence helped make us better."??? Or will you make more excuses about the things you think are "no fair"?
On the other hand, if you're that tired of losing and really don't feel like trying to improve anymore, you can always search for the dinkiest all comers meets you can find so you can blow away some fat guys. Then you can listen to them complain.
