Spikes in a carry-on?

Umm, yeah. Probably best if you don't do that.

they probably will not pass inspection. why don't you want them in your checked bag? do you plan on doing intervals at 30,000 feet? the chances of them getting stolen or lost in your checked bag is very slim. just check them!

Take the little pointy metal spikes out of your spikes, and you should have no trouble...duh.

SO there I was a couple months ago going to xc nationals. The TSA people took my toothpast and my bottled H20. I had my spikes (with 1/2 inch spikes i think in them) in my backpack. I said to them, you just took my H20 and let me take 12 metal spikes on a shoe through. The guy just smiled at me. So, yes, you can get them through.

Probably he just doesn't want to bother checking anything.

Lost luggage is a greater possibility than having them stolen - but it amounts to the same thing. If you've got a meet and the airline is still tracking down your bag you are screwed.

Always take them in a carry on but remove the spikes - just in case your checker is having a bad day.

I usually check my spikes and carry on a pair of flats. That way if my checked bag gets lost, I at least have something to race in.

I've gotten thru every time (prolly 10 times, at least). In fact, I've gotten through with them in my shoes (which were in my bag).

I got through with 5/8" needles in the shoes.

here's a thought, if you wear them on the plane, you'll have an easier time making it to the bathroom in turbulence. Anyway, I NEVER check my racing shoes, shorts, singlet, contact lenses. NEVER. Take them with you, remove the spikes, put them in a small clear baggie. Bring your wrench.

First of all, what's up with the metal spikes? You might have argued that metal vs. ceramic was a don't care before 9/11, but why even deal with trying to "sneak" 16 pointed metal objects past inspectors when you can go to eastbay or somewhere and buy ceramic that's lighter than steel and won't show up on any x-ray? So easy, a caveman could do it....

I always travel to meets with a primary pair of racing spikes (with 1/4" ceramic pyramids, for mondo) and a backup pair (with xmas trees, for rekortan). The backup pair, my speedsuit, a jacket/warmup and anything else I need to be able to race if they lose my luggage goes in my carryon. Everything else is checked. My athletes also travel this way.

I have never had a pair of spikes with ceramic spikes installed questioned by TSA. But there was an instance last summer where Asafa Powell was not allowed on the plane with his spikes, would not allow the spikes to be checked, and ended up missing a race (I think it was Athens).

That's nothing, last year flying from Portland to SC, while they were busting everyone's nads about gels and liquids, I get on a plane only to have some ladies in front of me pull out yarn and a couple of foot long pointy metal knitting needles.

Don't do it, because that gets me very mad and I've had it with these motherf*cking spikes on this motherf***ing plane!"
