By 'nice' I mean friendly and not necessarily upscale.... I was down there back in September and I really liked it. Enjoyed the Saratoga/Los Gatos area where I stayed. Lots of cyclists!

I like the East Bay a lot. Walnut Creek etc...
San Fran itself is nice but expensive...
Parts of Oakland are nice - someone might want to chime in on what parts.
Overall, the Bay Area is awesome for outdoor activities...
For you, Fairfax in Marin County.
Do you have a million dollars to buy a house? That will narrow down the answer considerably!
I would be renting an apt most likely
Do you have $2K/month for rent...that will also narrow things down.

In my HONEST opinion, I'd stay away from Los Gatos. I used to be a newspaper reporter in Los Gatos, and those are the snobbiest people I've ever met. I also wrote for the paper in Saratoga and found that much better.
East Palo Alto / Mountain View - should be cheaper, also close to some good dirt levee trails in the Baylands.
There are studios in San Jose in reasonable neighborhoods that go for under 1000. I have seen as low as 650 in OK areas. A nice apt. can go for 1200. I rent out my spare house in west San Jose for 1800.
great runnin in the nickel-dime.
aka 510
better known to you as san leandro.
If cost is no option:
Orinda/Moraga/Lafayette
If cost is a concern:
Benecia/Fairfield/Vacaville
San Leandro/Castro Valley are good bargins, but there isn't any nightlife. Short commute to Berkely or SF for nightlife.

Alameda is a good place, and has great weather and location; close to the Oakland Hills and 25 minutes from the city.
yes good, you people shock me with some of your postslos gatos, white, yuppie suv driving republican wannebes and soccer momsnorth berekely is good, great neighborhoods decent trailsrockridge near berkeley good, young, cool restaurants, bars right there, for running you absolutely cannot beat mill valley... it is a little too white but the scenery near there is worth it... running on mt. tam trails and the headlands and muir woods is nothing short of miraculous... in my experience running many, many places (colorado, swiss alps, canada, other parts of u.s., other parts of europe) the running near mill valley and ross rivals just about anywhere (i personally prefer marin's trails and up around vancouver and victoria)imo anywhere on the penisula is not a good place to live... there is nothing unique down there in the sense that they love malls and traffic... some of the nature down there is very cool as well thoughsome parts of sf are very fun to livealameda is alright, only flat running in the bay area... it is very family oriented and your options for public transportation are limited whereas if you are in berkeley you have bartwalnut creek and such kind of lose the feel of being in the bay area... mostly yuppies and beginning to sprawl suburbsanywhere else in the bay area you need to know about?

Look at a map of the East Bay Regional Park district, then pick a town that's close to a lot of trails. You can't go wrong.
I'm sure other bay area denizens will disgree, but I actually like Fremont. It's super cheap (you can get a nice apartment close to everything for MUCH less than comparable areas elsewhere), close to the highways, has BART access, and has access to trails--Alameda Creek Trail, Garin, Mission Peak, Coyote Hills, Sunol, Pleasanton Ridge, etc. It's quiet and has a Trader Joes.
hmm, is there a reason for this??access to parking lots you mean, 880, dumbarton bridge, 680, 580but hey whatever you like... the only thing I mind is when people are ask where to live and everyone says where they livemaybe this isn't everyone but does is it really that hard for people to be objective about thingsare people happy where they are - probably, absolutely does it mean objectively it is the best place to live... maybe, maybe not
