yeah, "On the Edge" was/is a cult running "classic" It mixes Hollywood hype with a real event. I think in the movie, the fictional"Cielo-Sea" (sp?) is based on the VERY real Dipsea race, north of San Fran. Uses actual course, a few actual runners (which is nice): Garry Bjorklund, maybe others I don't know or recognize, in the race. Marty Liquori does a pretty good job as the commentator who explains how corrupt the "ATU"(?) ,or something like that, was, forcing elite Track athletes to be hypocritcal regarding race money, in the 1970's. (Gee, wonder who that's going after!?!?) Bruce Dern does a very credible job as the hero, Wes Holman. It's a little bit "Schmaltzy", kind of a Rocky for Runners. Entertaining, with Bjorklund uttering "Hang in there" ,I think as his only line. There are at least two editions of it, one being a little "salty" w/ Dern in a steamy scene with a sultry old girlfriend!! The other edition is more of a Disney "feel-good" story. Probably worth the buck I bought it for, at a garage sale. (Wasn't nominated for any Oscars back in the mid '80s!!!)
