I am looking for advice fromanyone who has recovered from an eating disorder with regards to how increasing their food intake effected their athletic performances.
I have restricted my food intake for a number of years now and have finally realised that I have to do something about it. I am not horrifically under weight - 5ft 6 and 8stone, but my eating patterns are awful. I generally don't eat proper foods but survive by snacking on crap (sweets, chocolate, energy drinks, peanut butter from the jar etc) when I am in need of a quick energy boost. The scary thing is that I actually run pretty well off this and do my best sessions/races when I start feeling pretty hungry having not eaten anything for hours. I also seem to recover better if I dont eat straight after training! I guess my body is just used to this as I have been like this for some time now.
However I really want to improve my eating patterns. The problem is that when I do eat meals, in particular when I eat breads, pizza, pasta etc, the next day i feel terrible running. My lower back is sore and I feel lethargic and have no energy. I am wondering if I have maybe developed an intolerance to wheat or whether it is just how I should expect to feel as my body gets used to real food!
I have started by increasing my fruit and veg intake for now but I really want to add in more carbs.
I am looking for stories from anyone out their who has recovered from such problems and how they felt doing so and how long it was before they saw an improvement in their athletic performance. I am no jogger, I am a female in my late 20's and have ran sub 10min/17min/34.30 for 3/5/10km respectively.
I reckon I can go faster if I treat my body better? What do you think????
