It doesn't play to your strengths as much, but you should stay close to the lead until about 300m to go, then assess your situation. At that point, you can use your kick as/if needed. You don't need to win the prelim, but you have to make sure you advance; and lagging too far off the pace makes the heat *overall* not a relaxing experience!
'Way too many guys (e.g. Wottle in '72?) have relied on their kicks to advance them in the 1500, and basically pissed away a shot in the finals.
Depends on how you move up, first three in heat,winners of heat and next fastest 6 or what ever, better to expend a tad more to insure your getting into the final than "saving something" for you to cheer a teamate in the finals if you guess wrong.
Lease is correct, sounds like he has been there done that. Unless you are the creme de la creme the finals are not a given, and even if you are, shirt happens.
