ambassador orange says Joan Benoit.
I'd have to go with Adam Goucher. People don't realize how f***ing tough he is. Just think about the comebacks he made over and over. Also one of his best quotes after a 1500 in the snow while at CU: "I ran so hard my teeth hurt." That is my all-time favorite quote and still gives me chills.
Steve Jones-defines blue collar
Steve Jones was a monster.
Yeah, it would have to be a Blue-Collar runner, none of this white-collar BS. Those White-Collar guys are practically buying their success.
my teeth hurt after yesterdays workout. peoples teeth always hurt after hard runs.
This guy is tough...
Kevin Krause. If you know, watched him run, or ever heard of him, you know what I mean.
Ryan Hall. Look at all the threads he's generated. Only the toughest can do something like that.
I don't know, Salazar had a couple of unbelievably tough and close marathons in the early 80s. Didn't the one against Beardsley effectively ruin Salazar?
Jonesy, Plaatjes and all the old guard Boulder guys used to talk about Castaneda having some juevos.
i think we can all relate

Charlie Maguire, without a doubt. Once saw him run sub 9:00 2-mile many years after having trained, while suffering from his many inner demons. May he rest in peace. Malmo may back me up on this one.
Nobody who reads this probably remembers a 48-second 400 guy named Mike Sherber, who used to run for Princeton back in the lat 1970s. I was an undergrad there, an XC wannabe senior walk-on (didn't make it), and used to watch his races at Jadwin Gym. I have never seen a runner who suffered so visibly and so much. Zatopek must have been something like this. His head would tilt, his mouth would distort into a tortured grimace; he'd outlast, outkick, and beat plainly more talented guys simply by virtue of his willingness to make himself suffer. Quite a sight. I've never forgotten it.
That was a refreshing interview from Wetmore. Much more self-effacing and acknowledging of the talent he's been fortunate enough to work with than previous public impressions of him that I've read/seen/heard.
derek clayton....manhandled his 162lb frame across 26.2mi in 2:08 something...and no frekin water breaks....i bet he didnt care to much about his blood lactate , his vdot, overtraining ..or anything like that.
Rod Dixon. Back in the day he could of smoked anyone at the mile to the marathon, then drink you under the table, then kick your a$$ in a bar fight.
I thinnk Rod could still do most of those things today.
this is not even close. the toughest runner is for sure Paula Radcliffe. And for the record I don't even like women's running. I use to think Joanie and Jonesy were tough. Never thought that about Gouch but for sure, it has to be Paula.
