I live in the Charlotte, NC area and am looking to make my final decision on a spring marathon in the general area (within a 3-4 hour drive).
Right now I'm considering the following:
Feb 17: Myrtle Beach Marathon
Mar 4: Alpharetta Marathon
Mar 25: ING Georgia Marathon or Ellerbe Springs Marathon
Apr 1: Knoxville Marathon
I'd be look for a sub 3:00 performance but time is not the only key. I don't mind rolling courses but will save my mountain man imitation for Grandfather Mountain this coming July. I want a nice well organized race under good conditions. I realize that the two Georgia races are first year events so are unknowns to some extent but seem to have some money and sponsorship behind them. I understand that Ellerbe (closest and only one not requiring an over-night stay) is a small race and pretty hilly course with no traffic control. Knoxville is rolling but has gotten less then stellar reviews from several runners. I'm also concerned about the half marathon finish interferring with the marathon in Knoxville as well (Dallas all over again). All of this may point me to Myrtle Beach but the timing is least attractive given I just ran a marathon Dec 9th (although I am recovery very quickly).
Anyone have experience with these races or some insight into the Georgia races that might help me make my final decision.
Any races I forgot about?
