I won a all-comers mile in 5:41.
Yeah, they announced the event, name, and distance over the loudspeaker. But the guy did it in a perfectly level voice, no laughter, which kind of left people doing this double take where 5 seconds after the announcement, they looked at the person next to them like, "did I hear that right?"
I didn't bust on mom too bad for kicking her ass; she drove and it would have been a long walk home. Yup, trouncing your own mother for an overall win is, um, uh... something, but the award for this thread has to go to ex D1's 19' shot.
Thats beautiful.
2000 800m gold medal
The first race I ever won was a 11:30 for 3200m in hs. Won by a minute. Also won a road 20k in 1:16, winning by over 5 minutes. Reading local road race results, it seems like many of the smaller 5ks are won in 17 and change.
I won a 5K yesterday in 18:49. Worse still, irt was a short course probably worth 19:15.
first summer after college i ran a 10k as part of a marathon festival. all three races started at the same time (10k, 1/2, marathon) and i just ran with the leaders of the half to help with the pace til my turnaround. ended up finishing in like 36:40 (roughly 7 minutes slower than my best from college)...
worst part: i won $500 and a MASSIVE plaqueand the congratulations of my coworkers monday morning. i almost didn't want to accept them out of shame, but my rent was due.
I entered a race last summer that had a 3 and 5 mile option. I figured more runners would enter the 5, so I ran that race. I ran with a lead group of about 10 or 12 at about 540 pace. We came to the 3 mile finish, and half the group started kicking. The other half just sstopped. I kept going, looked back, and was all alone! We went through 3 miles in 1655, and I was the only 5 miler left. THen, I went through an intersection, and there was a man with a flag, and he proceeded to direct me to turn left. I ran two blocks, and heard people yelling at me...he directed me the wrong way! By the time I got back on course, there was second place, hot on my tracks. Not to mention the hills and heat were terrible the last two miles. I was out of shape, and never wanted to walk so bad in my life. The guy behind me just stayed there, and I outsprinted him to win in an outstanding 30;25! won a whole bunch of crap, and everyone thought I was fast! I however knew better and was truly embarassed! i was supposed to sit on a float with the women's winner for their summer festival parade....alas I declined.
I'll be back next year to defend my one and only race win!
No one can top this i bet: 22:47 for a 5k!
i didn't think it was possible to run that slow (while actually trying), but i hadn't run a step for 5 months.
the bizzare thing was that it was one of the only races i've ever won. i never flat out win races when i'm running my normal times (usually mid-19s).
i wanted to cry after that race, but given that i won, i didn't want to seem rude and sulk around. anyway i got a $50 gift certificate, so that was nice.
it was a small race, kind of hilly, too, and the winning male ran just under 20 minutes,....
but still: it was the most horrible victory ever! and it motivated me to put up my racing flats for a while and do some serious training.

There were 4 teams competing, and I was only running the meet as a workout, so my coach put me in the 4x800, 1600, 800, and 3200.
That's what I ran every meet in high school. These days, if I have 2 races in 2 days it's a disaster.
I won a marathon a couple years ago in 3:20. Out of about 300 marathons in the U.S. that year, I had the 7th slowest winning time.
I rocketed to the lead on the uphill first mile in 7:52. I kept looking back waiting for someone to pass me. I ended up running the whole thing alone winning by over 10 minutes. There were more cows along the course than people.
I won a road 5k in 18:30 by 20 seconds. There was a group of 4 of us at the mile marker and right when we hit it I just took off and gapped the field and took the rest of the race pretty easy from there. I should of pushed myself harder... but I just wanted the win sadly.
my jr year in hs i jogged a 5k on the track in a quad meet againist 3 or 4 inner-city schools in aout 19:45. My 1st 400 was 90 seconds and my coach told me to slow down. basically, one of my teamates and i basically alternated leading laps and he just let me take off in the last 400 to let me win bc i was older than him. I did my last 200 in about 35 seconds and beat my teamate by about 15 seconds.
Senior year in high school, I had been hurt for about 6 weeks during xc. I think I did a workout maybe 3 days before this race, but everything else was just biking. Anyway, it was a dual meet with our rival school, and I was our team's number one runner. The other team had a group of guys that I could beat. Anyway, the race plan that my coach and I decided upon would be the plan that would help my team to have the best chance of winning. Also, I hadn't raced in two months so I didn't know how I would feel. Anyway, we start off the race, and I'm just hanging out in the back of the pack, and all of the guys on the other team look around wondering where in the crap I am. I slowly make my way up toward them and set a pace that I know my teammates should be able to handle. So, we cruise through the mile in like 5:20, and I am just calling the names out of all of my teammates to make sure they aren't slacking off. The other team wonders what is going on since I am going down the list checking off my teammates names. Anyway, after about a mile and a half, my parents, the other team, and everybody watching is wondering what is going on b/c we turned into the wind, and I was visibly putting out more effort just to not pass these guys. So, as soon as we turned into the woods, I executed the plan. I ran the next 100 meters of the race in about 13-14 seconds. Some of their guys tried to go with me for a second, but then they thought better of it. Anyway, I put about 10 seconds on them during that 100 meter burst before I settled back into a comfortable pace again. My coach and I knew that the only way we could win would be if I didn't drag along the other team's top guys with me so when I made my move, I was supposed to haul. Anyway, when I came out of the woods 1000 meters later everybody gasped and was amazed at how much ground I had put on the other team's top guys. Little did they know that I had put all of it during just 100 meters. Their coach's look was priceless when he saw me and couldn't find one of his runners. What a fun race. Those were the days.
Disclaimer: I do not pretend to be amazingly fast. I only ran like 17 flat that day, but it was probably the most I have ever enjoyed running. However, later on once I actually started to train more I obviously ran much faster. I know this might not exactly fit the topic of this thread but I thought some people might find it amusing. Also, this race was even greater b/c that winter I went on to open the first 400 meters of a mile in 82 before their coach told their guy to go around me. I was actually pretty pleased when I still managed to run 4:40 even though I shut it down the last lap. I was a high 4:20's miler at the time. High school was so much fun. I can't get away with that stuff anymore.
I once finished second in a SMALL meet (not a dual meet) running 11:16 for 3k. It was comprised of seniors. The freshman race was 9:49 and 9:50.

I won a 5K X-C in 19:32 in December. Won by over a minute. Dodgy conditions, but the course record is 15min+.
