I'm just a fan, Henry...I have no input with any meet directors. I think someone might have put a link to that race and the race director, back in this thread; or maybe if you "google" Carlsbad 5k...it will take you to the website. Good luck.

Can Mike long get me to Carlsbad next month?
Can you ask him? I'm very hot for this 5k masters championships race.
Henry
Henry,
As I told you last week, I asked Mike Long whether he had received your email. He had, but he had some concerns based on past experiences. I think that you should call Mike, and speak to him. Let him know what kind of shape you are in. I think you need to talk to him yourself.
You can reach Mike through Elite Racing. The telephone number is 1-858-450-6510. Tell him that there are many people on letsrun.com who want you to run in his race!!!
I will come and bring my team too; which will patronize the sponsors that have booths and tables set up. (the stadium equivilent of putting 'butts in the seats').
Yes, Henry Rono; come to the Carlsbad 5k in early April. I will be running that one too, as a 55 year old Masters. I will be lucky if I can average 6 minutes a mile, however. I'm not in your class but would love to meet you and see you again! (I saw your backside in college a few times, as you moved further and further away as the race progressed).
Henry's training is a constant source of shock and awe.
If any of you can reasonably suggest to Mike Long that Henry's presence will ratchet up interest in the race, I hope you'll do so.
to Avacodo...email him this page....
Henry: are you running this Masters mile next month? It appears that you have been invited.
(from another thread)
The Johnny Mathis Track and Field Invitational has agreed to include a "masters mile" to this year's line up of events...this is a very well run regional collegiate/open meet held at a great facility...the old guys mile will go off at 11:40 on Saturday 4/7 ...entry deadline is Wednesday 4/4...contact me directly at
for further info...and, pass the word.

Sounds like a great idea Mike. Mathis has always been a great meet. A Master's Mile is a good addition.
Will Henry Rono be 'ready' for this? Enough talk; I wanna see some action!

Just got word that we'll do entries on EZ Meets and should be live in fairly short order at
Have gotten another couple of declared entrants today, so field is certainly coming together...will keep you all posted.
RE: Rono, I did actually personally invite him so we shall see.
Has anybody asked henry what he seriously wants to accomplish in the coming years with his life and running? The thing i hear the most is what you all want from him. From many years in the coaching business, the athletes that i have worked with which includes a number of elites that produce the greatest results regardles of age and past history of accomplishment are very self motivated and will do what they need to do to accomplish what they are truly focused on and commited to.It is quite clear to me from followig this thread from the get go that he doesn't have the same vision, passion, clarity, focus, commitment that you all have for him.I know he appreciates all the support and excitement that you all provide on a daily basis, but it is time to let him go on with his life on what he is truly commited to.We all will look forward to a successfull outcome what ever fork in the road he decides to take.....Retired coach
So, the dream dies? (our dream, not his?)
You are right...there are 2 different scenerios in play here; 1) Henry runs for his health, his spirit, etc. and goes on with his life of coaching, teaching, etc., but that's the extent of his running, or 2) He had the fire, desire, luck and health to train, diet, etc, at a high level to compete, seriously at the 55-60 Masters level.
Of, course, we fans, perhaps living our own dream through Henry, hope for the latter; you are saying, that from your analysis of this thread and studying Henry's reponses, lack of responses, passing of time, etc. that #1 is the path you see him on......OK, I can see your point; but it was Henry, not us 'Rono fans' that started the "comeback for Masters record" talk; we just jumped on board to encourage, push, etc. to make him see it through.
"It is quite clear to me from followig this thread from the get go that he doesn't have the same vision, passion, clarity, focus, commitment that you all have for him."
Sir, with all due respect, I completely disagree with you.
Henry clearly demonstrates "vision, passion, clarity, focus, commitment." Henry has been training 2hours+ every day for almost a year, being quite open about his progress. We (the fans and commentators) are only talking about it. Henry IS doing all the hard work, day in and day out.
GO HENRY!

Hi Rono Fan
You are right. It was me who told him to get on this thread in the hopes that he could pick up some Dollars to pay some bills. It was then that this thread took a life. This thread has to end as i said before..The best of luck HENRY....Retired coach..
So there is no elite masters career in Henry's future? I'll have to admit that I was starting to wonder 'when' it was going to happen. He 'say's it's going to start with races next month and going through the summer. I hope he DOES see it through; but, if his belly doesn't burn with the fire for that anymore, I won't think any less of him. I guess he just has to decide if he's 'in or out'.

How do you no he is doing what he says he is doing? Do you no him and his truth....Retired coach
Yeah, what about all of the running he's been doing? running 1 1/2 to 2 hours a day, even jogging, has to amount to 80-100 miles per week? That sounds like he's been building a serious base before he goes into his interval phase. But, of course, if he hasn't gotten his weight down into the low 150's, it's all in vain. Not even the great Rono can seriously compete at 165 lbs.
Yeah, I too, was wondering how he was running so many miles and not losing weight any faster or gettin injured. I think we will all know which road he is taking by June.
To i was wondering to
Let us all become the Coach.Henry it is time to PRODUCE.CASE closed...Your fans...But with limited support...It is YOUR choice....Retired coach

I know him I spoke with himlast when I was in Austin Texas running half-marathon February 17,2007. Me and Patti connected me over cell-phone and we talked for hours discussing about the passion of running and the good old days VS the new generation.
Me and him speak the same language and he is an American. You the new generation of 21 century have a long way to understand what is running is all about.Listen to the Retired coach to tell you something,if are patient enough your five common sense might catch the truth of your running.
This evening was great.Keeing up with youngsters it is so great to follow their foot steps;however, the last ten minutes they were running extremely wild I cut them lose. I let them warm up starting from zero minute by the time 30 minutes they were in gear number three, after 50 minutes I hook them with the top gear number 5 when they reach 60 minutes, this is the time to stop.
They were couching and sweating as if they are coming out of sauna or steam room.
"I feel better now,"said Kris.Solomon is tripping sweat and bending down, while John is facing up the sky with silent voice no comment.
As we are talking and finishing up our workout,Mbarak is coming and passing by to the GYM.He has a comments about the training too, "Solomon is getting in shape, I have not seen him like this,You too henry!!"
Henry
Mr. Rono:
I have no idea what you just said. Let's make it simple; are you or are you not, training for a serious attempt at Masters competition? We still love and respect you, either way and will buy your book and come out to see you; but PLEASE, stop talking in circles, that never answer anything.

I have try to call him today, but I couldn't find him.I have the same numbers as you are.
I know what the rate of training I'm going through. I see and I feel 15 minutes in 5k,but not carlsbad though in the near future.I will run in Carlsbad between 16:50-17:45 minutes for 5k.Then after that the time will start dropping down constantly.
The youngsters are driving me through all kinds of pain and aches in every corner of my body. Two sections a day for 5 days aren't savvy.Do not break down good times in 5k.Solomon has already accept me on 4:27 minutes for a mile record,he sees that in me.I think what you need is to make into official records right!
