Exactly. They have all the horses to do great things, but they haven't been able to put it together at NCAAs. Abdalluh had a very good XC Nats, but the rest of the team was flat for sure. Could be they weren't prepared for the hilly course? Either way, I think they should be in the top 2, but will they?

Nothing will match the D3 Atlantic Regional from 2004. At least the thread about it, that was a letsrun classic!
The only thing that would help this thread top the 2004 thread is that it was started on JULY 10TH. Get out and train guys.

Actually what would help it top the 2004 thread is if the Brockport team decides to flip the bird and shove innocent cortland runners during races, again. Oh and if there was a behind the scenes conspiracy to get said Brockport runners kicked off their team. Such drama there was in the '04.
Coach Wood’s is like a running genius. I have decided that you can never count Geneseo out. Cortland should have an amazing team this year...TCNJ, NYU...It will be an interesting year...Guess it is hard to tell until the races start!
Hey, I heard a rumor that Nolan Swanson will no longer be coaching this year... any truth to this?
False. In fact, he has been promoted to director of cross country and track and field.
He's also hosting a cross country camp later this summer, so unless something has changed since May 9th (date of the release), he's still there.
Does anyone know who will be in Cortland's incoming freshman class?
Seth DeBois from Guilderland
9th at AA's in XC (15:39)
11th at Feds in XC (16:33)
1600 - 4:23
3200 - 9:24
Ran well when it counted most.
Kyle O'Brien from Monroe-Woodbury
1st at Sec. 9 AA's (15:35)
Didn't run at States
38th at Feds in XC (16:58)
3k steeple - 9:41
Must have been hurt at sectionals or at least before states. Didn't run well at Feds either.
There are others, but these 2 give you an idea of the talent they are getting.
does nyu have any freshman coming in?

a running genius who didnt have any all-americans in outdoor track. If you are a national champ xc team you should score some points in track NCAA's. A running genius would realize, hmmmmm my athletes falter at NCAA's in track year after year, why? Is my philosophy of peaking them for mid season meets with fast competition hurting my athletes???[
bump
In Woodsie's defense, there top girl from XC broke her ankle just past the new year and didn't compete at all in track. Surely Liz would have done something special on the track as well.
As for the others, Marta Scott should have been an AA in the 1500, but didn't "race" at all in the final (ran sub 4:30 in the prelims). Shannon Griggs ran well during outdoors, but had an injury issue that limited her training the final couple weeks before nationals. Renne Catalano graduated, she would have been at Nats in something (3k steeple, 5k, 10k). They certainly are talented, but just didn't put it together through the long season. I wouldn't hold it against the Geneseo coaching staff, it happens.
I'm curious to know what everyone thinks of the women side of things this year at regionals. Geneseo is the incoming national champion so I'm sure everyone will agree they have to be the fvorites so long as everyone is healthy, but whos gonna grab the second auto?
Also is anyone else weary of the at large system and the lack of respect the teams from the east have gotten in the past compared to the midwest schools? I mean last year if you broke it down into the east heartland and west the east would have won both the mens and womens team scores at nattys. I have a feeling its not going to matter this year and the midwest is going to horde all of the bids.
I guess on the guys side it cant get any worse with only 2 bids given last year anyway.
Well, they are revamping the rules, changing the qualifying standards for XC. I don't know the specifics, but from what I know, I do believe that the Midwest won't be able to send a half dozen teams, and the South and Mid-Atlantic won't get stuck with only 1 or 2. Anyone know the true details of the new setup?
Probably Cortlands best incoming harrier comes from Jerry Greenlaw, great XC runner and hard worker. Has run 4:25 and 9:23, along with Dubois these two could be very dangerous.
I remember seeing something about 7 at large teams. I'll try to ask the dude who told me about it for details.
From a friend of mine:
According to the SUNY Brockport Coach: "There is a new system in place. Each of the 8 regions will get 2 automatic bids. Then there will be 16 at large bids to be passed out by the championship committee. In order to get an at large bid, you must place in the top 5 in your region. This also means that no region will get more than 5 teams.
There are several criteria that the committee will use to determine who receives the at large bids, including how the team performs in the final 7 weeks of the season (last week of September through regionals), place at conference meets, previous performance against teams who earned the automatic bids, and a few others as well. But the most important is their performance at regionals.
Each region gets 7 individuals.
Here is the selction criteria (not listed in preferential order) to determine at large teams:
- Regional Place
- Late season performance (meets within the las 25% of the season)
- Head to head competition with teams already in the championships field and other potential at-large teams in late season performance comparisions
- Gap times amongst runners within a team (1 - 5 runners) at regionals
- Regional meet results - point gap for places of a team's finish and total team score versus the team that placed ahead of them and behind them
- Late season meet results - point gap for places of a team's finish versus the tam that placed ahead of them and behind them"
As far as the gaps go, another post explained that the NCAA prefers a team with guys that placed, for example, 10,11,12,13,14 as opposed to a team that placed 1,11,12,13,23, even though both equal the same score.
I'm gunna pick TCNJ for the W because I'm super biased and I'll be on the team because I'm not gunna get hurt this year...knock on wood hahaha. Somebody said that TCNJ guys didn't run well during track, but Guerrero and Alpaugh both ran sub 15:05, and we had some good times laid down by those who were not top 7 last year but they're now looking for a spot based off of their track seasons.
As you said, Geneseo has to be the favorite. They still return 5 of their top 7 (graduating Catalano and Scott). The health of Liz Montgomery is the big question. Also, the fact remains that Christiana Martin didn't race well at all from mid-indoor through outdoors and Karen Merrill was pretty non-existent during track as well. I feel Geneseo will be the top team, regardless of these questions.
Ithaca could be there to claim the top spot if Geneseo faulters as they returns their entire top 7. TCNJ will be in the mix as well (as usual). After that it dropped off quite a bit last year. Plattsburgh will be tough, since they have 2 very, very good girls.
Top teams
1. Geneseo
2. Ithaca
3. TCNJ
too close to call for rest, but here are the contenders for the top 10:
St. Lawrence
Plattsburgh
Brockport
Cortland
Fredonia
UR
Hamilton
Individuals to watch:
Only 4 of the top 30 at last years Regional were seniors!
Montgomery - Geneseo (returning from a broken ankle)
Griggs - Geneseo
Busby - Plattsburgh (keep the knee healthy)
Wiszowaty - Plattsburgh (looked great in the 10k at NCAAs)
Swan - Hartwick (btw, they dropped track)
O'Sullivan - Oneonta (outstanding outdoor track season)
Fasulo - TCNJ
Ruston - Lehman (very good indoor season, what happened outdoors?)
Blasiak - Ithaca
Nadolski - Ithaca
Wilson - Brockport (good run in the steeple)
Wilcox twins - Ithaca (do they do anything separate?)
