There's a reason for that (and that's only percentage-wise, not in nominal terms). You must adjust for the fact that there were far fewer people in this country back in the "Gone with the Wind" days (the population has more than doubled since 1940).
The most popular movies back then were more enjoyable than the most popular movies of today.
The average Hitchcock film is far better than anything out right now and that's been the case most of the time the past 10-20 years. Directors back then actually cared about making good movies instead of just blowing big budgets on big stars and special effects. They completely ignore the fact that those things alone do not make a good movie.
How often did the theatres back then release a movie like "Phat Girlz" or "Dude where's my car?" or "SuperBabies: Baby Geniuses 2"? Even the 50's B sci-fi films had more well thought out stories and better direction.
Moviemakers of the 30s, 40s, 50s, and 60s took good stories and almost undoubtedly made them into good movies. Case and point against movies of today: Da Vinci Code. The movie should've practically made itself. Instead we ended up with an average film. 95% of movies today are completely forgettable.
But I digress.
Original thread...Star Wars is the most overrated collection of movies of all time. They are slightly above average movies. I never understood all the hype. Something like Blade Runner had much better special effects and a more thought provoking story, and I'm not exactly a huge fan of the movie.
Star Trek? At least some of the stories are interesting but I usually can't stand to watch it.
