COACH SALARIES

Actually, unless something has recently changed, Al Connie has a full-time teaching job in the local public school system. He makes more teaching than he does coaching. So he is doing very well for himself.

I could be wrong, but this is what I heard several years ago.

did a review recently of the salaries of the local high school teachers/coaches, and the salaries of our Division I collegiate conference. The teachers/coaches from high school with the same level of experience make about 10K more than the collegiate coaches. One of our coaches who has 10 years of service and another 10 as an assistant someplace else makes about $60,000 where the local teacher/coach makes $70,000. High School may not be that bad.

You are right, but the D-1 coaches don't have to teach or babysit. The pure coach can kick a bad kid off the team--that is hard to do in a classroom.

Oh boy one of my favorite subjects on letsrun.."coaches salary's" I persoannly know of plenty of Head D-1 Coaches that make low $30,000. to low $ 40,000.00 a year with over ten years Head D -1 coaching experience.

If you want to coach and make a decent salary by in large stay in the high school ranks, if not I'll see you at Wal-Mart wearing the ucking blue vest at Christmas so you can buy your kids and wife a gift or two,haha...

I think I heard a couple years ago, that the head XC coach at Wichita St. was around 40k. May be more now.

I think people would be interested to know what the coaches at Haverford college make.

Haverford is a private school so their information may not be available like these public schools. The state school's information is public record, which is why this information is available. I doubt the case is the same with Haverford.

maybe, but it really doesn't matter, because who ever succeeds either tom or fran will make a fraction of what they do. the trend in d3, especially at small schools is to contract the budget for coaching salaries. haverford will be no exception to this when it becomes time to hire new coaches.

I can't remember the link, however if you do enough different key word searches, you will come up with it. They are from a private website that uses Public Disclosure laws to attain and post public salaries for the state of Washington. The site actually has every department and office in the State listed, as well as many of the cities and counties. It's been up for several years. I found those figures some time last year, I think. The site seems to be a year behind on it's information. So you can't find current salaries.

It is also of note that while they list salaries, they don't list benefits and bonuses. A coach at a big Pac-10 school may have a certain base salary, which is listed, but they often also get bonuses for team performance and stuff like that. It also wouldn't indicate if they get a car, or other budget line items that directly benefit the coach.

Not surprisingly, even though state salaries are public domain, the states rarely make an effort to make those statistics accessable. I guess that is why the Washington information is on a private website and why it isn't easy or possible to find many other states salary statistics online. I'm sure there are many state officials that would rather not have the public realizing what they make.

Oh, and while I am not a lawyer, due to public disclosure laws there is a pretty good chance there is a way for anyone to contact their state government and request this type of information. I think they have to provide it to you. So you might contact them, by phone or e-mail, and request specific state salaries. If you do, post it on here. It's very interesting stuff!

For state schools, do Google searches with the name of the school, faculty salaries, Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), and the like...

Here's an example from the University of Virginia in 2004:

About 15 years ago, I was offered a top collegiate position as head coach. They asked if i would also teach some classes in the summer. The kicker was they offered me almost $40,000 less than I was making in a local high school.

I call bullshit. First, I doubt you were making that much as a teacher, unless you have a PhD and have been teaching 40+ years in a very expensive state to live in....even then, I doubt it. Second, I doubt you were offered a TOP collegiate position as head coach and asked to teach classes. That just does not happen. At least not at TOP programs. I work fulltime at a medium sized Div 1 school and we are not asked to teach, even during the year. We can teach, but we get paid extra.

Not speaking for original poster, but there is no doubt that his figure of $40,000 is on the money. As a high school teacher/coach (in an expensive state, but no PhD), I easily make that much more than some collegiate head coaches. And I am confident I would be considered for collegiate coaching opportunities, though not for a head coach at a top program. My $0.02.
