man, this is a battle that could go on and on.
lets look at it really objectively:
NBA:
detroit: pistons
n.j: nets
comment: detroit has 3 NBA titles, NJ has been decent only since jason kidd arrived.
advantage: detroit
NFL:
detroit: lions
nj: jets/giants
comment: while the giants and jets play in nj, they still call themselves new york teams. while this is probably one of the greatest insults ever, detroit has the lions.
advantage: new jersey
Baseball:
detroit: tigres
n.j.: a half dozen minor league teams
comment: up until this year, the tigers were playing minor league ball in the majors. while you saw minor league ball in jersey, you didn't go expecting to see major league ball. and 6 teams give you more choices than 1. but le tigres are playing well this year...
advantage: push
NHL:
detroit: red wings
n.j.: devils
comment: both teams have been very, very good in the past 15 years. both have 3 stanley cups. both are not playing right now. however, detroit is "hockeytown, u.s.a" and the devils had their stanley cup parade in the meadowlands parking lot.
advantage: detroit
Colleges:
detroit: wayne state, university of detroit-mercy
nj: rutgers, princeton, trenton, rowan, and a whole host of other crappy schools.
comment: i guess you can count UM for detroit since it is so close, but that's like counting the yankees for n.j. detroit-mercy gets a nod because they used to play some mean basketall (with t-shirts that said: university of detroit...NO MERCY!) and because they had a bad-ass fencing team back in the 70s. wayne state is the older brother of kevin arnold state. but n.j. has princeton (who is currently good at fencing) and filled with a bunch of douchebags who have "eating clubs" instead of fraternities - can you get any more blue nose? while princeton had guys like einstein there in the 50s, they have recently produced guys like "stuff happens rumsfeld." oh yeah, rutgers sucks.
advantage: you lose if you go to school in jersey or detroit.
running scene:
detroit: hansons
n.j.: shore a.c.
comment: nj has one of the best road racing scenes around. while hansons isn't in detroit proper, they do have guys run the big races. n.j. college track teams are pretty good (not great), and n.j. h.s. track produces a fair amount of studs for a state that small. i guess it comes down to this: if you were going to do a run, where would you rather run? jersey or detroit?
advantage: jersey (no one runs in detroit.)
looks like we're all tied up. i'll give the nod to detroit because they can say they're across the bridge from canada. normally, jersey would say, "we're across the bridge from new york" and that would be fine. but jersey is also across the bridge from philly, which is the dirtiest city in america (edging out wheeling, WV, jackson MS, and baltimore.)
winner: detroit.
