Honestly I wouldn't read too much into this, as he comes from a family of athletes who have had a lot of junior success without carrying that onto senior success. One of his older sisters competed for Aus both as a junior (world juniors in Oregon) and as a senior (world cross, oceania cross champion) but never reached her full potential and left the sport while she was still at university. Another older sister broke her mum's (!) U16 state 3000m record and then left the sport shortly after. The third older sister was competitive at a national level but also left the sport. (As an interesting aside, the 3 older sisters won a state cross country relay title together. Junior teams race a 3x3km relay, meaning at one point in time, these 3 sisters were faster than any other clubs' 3 best don't-need-to-be-related runners). The mum was also clearly a talented junior but did not reach her expected potential (she did compete in the Chiba Ekiden and perhaps other international events of a similar tier - this is before my time!). There was also a thread about the youngest sister on here last year - she appears to still be competing successfully in track, surf lifesaving and triathlon.
I know nothing of the family's training approach but given lack of senior success, I'd be cautious about reading too much into these current performances.
