I hope she still enjoys running and is healthy eight years from now. It just seems like for every phenom that makes it, there are ten that just fade away.

However, the chances of Claudia making the big time is slim. I grew up racing as a national age grouper. Nearly all of the top runners (boys and girls) on the national level never made it to high school running.

There is one runner that continued on, and his name is Greg Whitley.

Unfortunatley, the burn out rate is through the roof. Do any of you recall the Garritson family? They were the epitome of prodigee turned nothing.

4:55 is 4:55, no matter who runs it. This time is only impressive for a 10 year old if one accepts the assumption that it indicates something special about the 10 year old's long term potential; and, the record shows, this assumption is, all other things being equal, highly dubious.

I disagree. On the international level the majority showed great promise at an early age. There are very few top runners who were just average when young. So while being awesome at age ten does not automatically mean one will be awesome later, being average at age ten almost certainly means one won't be awesome later. Accordingly, I would much rather be her than the 8th place girl.

She's Australian, unless you recently renamed Virginia as Victoria.

I hate to be a Letsdoubter, but are we sure this track is legit? I know little of what 10yo girls typically do at 1500, but practically all those times seem incredibly good - and this is an Aussie state meet??

Not as freaky as you think. Many girls peak at 10...or at least run well early. She obviously has talent but I will throw up if someone mentions the word Olympics already.

It depends on what you mean by "showing promise" and "average". Most top runners were not even training or racing seriously at 10, or at all, let alone running 4:55. There's a difference between "showing promise" at ages 10-13 and being a prodigy. As the national age group records attest, being a bona fide prodigy at 10 does not bode well at all for future success, with one or two very isolated exceptions. I would submit that the average future adult elite was running much closer to the 8th place girl in this race than to the first place girl, if she was running at all at this age. Certainly, future elites always "show promise" at an early age, but very few were record breakers, or even close, at ages 10-13. Or perhaps you don't know many elites.

The time is slow compared to Mari Gibbs time in the 1970's.

Mari ran a 5:03 mile at the age of 10 for the age-group American Record.

Screw you letsdoubter if it had been some all american state primary school meet you'd have no problem with it but because its an Australian state meet we must've measured the track while riding kangaroos while croc dundee chucked some shrimp on the barbie. and no this wasnt the baby stolen by a dingo.

FYI, it was held at Olympic Park in Melbourne which happens to be home to one of the IAAF World Athletics meets.

p.s. she also broke the state 10y.o record for the 800, 2.26 and won by 9 seconds, after winning the 1500 by 25 seconds.

I came across this thread today. I know this girl and to all you doubters she is still going strong. This month won the Australian U14 1500m in 4.42.12 and 4th in 800m 2.19 and she's only 11. She's right up there with the US Ms Rogers. She repeated similar performances a week later at the Victorian Little Athletics Champs.

Checking some meet results from down-under.

This girl is now 14 years old, and just ran 4.24 for 1500m.

What is Cantine's PR? Somewhere in that neighbourhood I think. She also ran the 1000 at UW yesterday and finished 4th(!) In 247 I heard. She is in 9th grade.
