I was on the Villanova 1966 and 1967 NCAA XC Championship teams finishing 8th and 10th (High Altitude). After college I became the Asst Track Coach at the Air Force Academy. I ran and helped coach Mike Ryan in his Senior Year at the Academy and he was one of the greatest runners I every knew. He only ran 6 days a week playing racquetball instead on Thursdays. After finishing 2nd to Lindgren in 1969 at Van Courtland park, Mike was getting invites to all of the major indoor meets for the 2 mile but ended up dropping out of track. I never knew why but he was a little different kind of guy. Actually, when Lindgren beat him at the NCAA I thought Mike should have beaten him but Lindgren was his idol. FYI, I was 2nd fastest High School 2 miler indoors in 1964 to Lindgren. I ran 9;10 at Madison Square Garden but it was very slow compared to Lindgren's 8:46 at the time. Actually, the night I did my 9:10 Lindgren was there running against Ron Clark in the main races. I knew a lot of great distance runners like Liquori, Dave Patrick, Dick Buerkle, Eammon Coughlan, Tracy Smith, and Billy Clark to name a few. Mike Ryan was the best.
