Hello everyone!
I wanted to share the results of a study we recently published. We compared 800, 1500, 5000, and 10k race times from 2001 to 2019 (pre-super spike race times) to 2021 to 2023 (super spike race times) and found the following:
1. 800 to 10k race times improved by an average of 0.9% (~2 sec per mile or 1.2 sec per kilometer) after the release of "super spikes"
2. The race time improvement was not uniform across all running speeds. Specifically, runners improved less while running at faster speeds. For example, average race times for elite female 5,000-m and 10,000-m runners improved by 1.3% to 2.0% while average race times for elite male 800-m runners improved by 0.23% to 0.36%.
