Bruce Dern was supposedly a respectable high school half-miler. Maybe even a college runner, I can't remember. I saw him on a talk show some years ago, talking about how he prided himself every year (he was maybe in his early forties at this point, maybe younger) on still being able to run his h.s. sophomore time in the 880. Then he said something really Bruce Dern-ish, about, "But boy, I'll tell ya, I had to heave my guts out on the side of the track after that, believe me! I had to blow chunks on that one!!!" This remark, as you might imagine, went over like a lead balloon.
Anyone know Dern's times?
Dern was interviewed by Runner's World back in the late 70s, when he made his most famous movies including the one about the Dipsea race (not really his most famous, but it was about running). It said that he ran about 1:57 for 880 y in high school or college. He also did some ultra-like stuff, so the Dipsea role was supposedly close to his real persona.
I heard Jason Rexing was a big Hollywood star before he ran the Antartica marathon in a world record of 1:58:56. It was never ratified though because he ran naked (though stapled the timing chip to his foot) and the race certifier died of hypothermia.
I think it was documented in ice age...you should check it out.
Bruce Dern was an avid runner. He was on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson in the mid-1970s and said at the time he could probably run a mile in "about four minutes and forty seconds."
Ozzy Osbourne probably could have run a world record for 3 miles, only he didn't eat enough bat heads.
I always thought Iggy Pop had the makings of a runner. He's always had that wiry look, no doubt from decades of shooting up.
Jim Morrison looked like the runner type as well.
How about Mick? Going to a Stones concert in the old days left you spent!!
yeah there is a couple of wiry rockers who might have been good runners had they not done SOOO many drugs, kurt cobain was always a skinny, skinny guy and about a distance runner's height

I have the school record from the highschool where Tom Cruise went. Its not 4:14....he never ran track.
Tom did not run in high school but he was on the track team as a high jumper. He still holds the school record but i dont know what it is. I remember reading that his mom said he trained for it by jumping repeatedly on the family couch.
this is real...
on Leno a few weeks ago, Michael Douglas was the guest, he said K. Sutherland (with whom he is staring in a new movie, hence the spot on Leno) claimed to be something of a track star in HS, specifically, over 400m..
no times though.
Chuck Norris could lap all these guys in a mile . . . twice.
jackie chan cleared 18' in the pole vault in hs

I think you misunderstood...A good friend of mine told me that Rexing stapled the chip to something else, which happens to hang down to just above the level of his foot (even in the Antartic temperatures).

Dana Carvey ran 1.55 in the 800...or was that Owen/Luke Wilson....or was that Robin Williams.
Dana Carvey ran 4:29 in the mile. He ran at either Carlemont High or San Carlos High near San Mateo, CA. I can\'t remember which. But his brother was faster.
Bill Cosby ran track, I don't remember the details. A singer -- oh crap, I can't remeber his name -- black guy, really good voice, sang Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire in the late 50s or 60s, was a 6-8 high jumper for USF (San Francisco).
Cosby ran at Temple. He actually kept himself in shape for a while. I've seen pictures of him looking a bit like a decent long sprinter on the Temple track when he was in his 40s (before he put on the weight.) I think, but I won't swear, that he was a 440 runner.
Forrest Who??

Johnny Mathis. There's an invitational meet named after him (or, there used to be).

Is that documentary available in stores? How fast was this forrest gump at 10k?
Tommy Mapother went to St. Xavier high school, class of 1979, in Louisville, KY, and while he apparently did play a little club hockey, he was most definitely NOT a 4:14 miler (or even a 5:15 miler for that matter).
