Tl;dr: Just ran a 2:47 marathon and looking to OTQ in the marathon and potentially break 4:00 in the mile.
Background: I was a good runner in high school with PRs of 4:14 and 9:10 off of around 50-60mpw during XC (took a few weeks off w/ a hip issue) and 30-40mpw during track. I ran one 8k freshman year of college (25:05) but that’s about it due to injuries.
I dabbled in triathlons and soccer after graduating since trying to run was frustrating. During COVID tried to go after my high school times. I ran somewhat consistently building back up to 30-40mpw with some minor setbacks along the way. I moved before I had a chance to race and then fell out of the routine and started played soccer.
Earlier this year as a 31 year old, I wanted to try something new and try a marathon and had about 17 weeks until the end of the Boston qualifying window so built up from 0 to 30 miles over 5 weeks then did Pfitz 12/55. Surprised myself and ran 2:47 (1:26/1:21 half splits) and felt pretty easy. Also stayed injury-free in the build up. Now looking to start up Pfitz 18/70 for Boston with a goal of ~2:30-32. I’ve learned how to train much better and have improved my form / strength / mobility.
The big goal is to OTQ and I’ve read that it’s beneficial to train for other distances rather than just the marathon. Had the thought that maybe there’s still a slim chance of breaking my mile PR and very slim chance at hitting sub-4.
So my plan is to run Boston (will look to do strides at least once a week as well to build up some speed) then do a 8 week block for a mile race over the summer (hoping to get close to 4:10), then do a fall marathon cycle (aiming for ~2:23), then do another mile block for some indoor races (aiming for sub-4 or low 4s). I’d be approaching 33 at that point which is old for a miler, I know. And then I would hop back to the marathon (and possibly back again to the mile depending on how things go).
Has anyone done something similar? I know both OTQ and sub-4 are ambitious, but very motivating to chase and would love to just see what I can do since I never hit my potential in college. Do I have a shot? Any advice or things you would modify?
