Jonathan Gault - "Mantz’s time was the fastest ever by an American in New York (Alberto Salazar ran 2:08:13 in 1981, but that course was later found to be ~150m short)."
Lol. Not true. 2:08:13 is 4:53 to 4:54 per mile. Al Sal would have easily covered those 150 missing meters in 30 seconds or so putting him well under Mantz's time. 43 years and no American can do better than that? C'mon man!
True. But what's wrong with JG? Why didn't he write Drug Cheat Salazar for consistency?
Know thy history??

Epo didn't exist. Super shoes didn't exist. Blood doping was definitely a part of the t&f scene but wasn't illegal or properly understood (despite Peter Coe "studying" it!) Steroids were definitely part of t&f but it's use was more primitive and suited for massive muscle development.
So, again History buff, in 1980 thru 82, how was Salazar cheating to get to 2:08??
American Men really haven't improved in the marathon like they have in the 800-10,000. What's the reason? Are we as good as we can get physically? Maybe instead of our best runners waiting until their track days are over, should be running marathons at age 23-24???

Marathon-specific groups that remain are Hansons and who else? Mammoth produced our best marathon podium hopes not named Rupp, Hasay, or Seidel in the past 25 years, and they are nothing burger now with the Kastors running the show. NOP now UAC doesn't have any marathoners at this point.

I was around Oregon in Sal's hay day, in group B workouts, saw Sal train all the time. He was elitist ahole back then.
There were no rumors about PEDs with the distance runners, though not on the inside, was on the ground. Though Sal became a real student of athletics and had enough IQ to gradually learn and become a great coach, in the early to mid 80's Sal I can confidently say was too stupid to use much science, nutrition or anything sophisticated. I guess it was possible that a bit of testosterone could have been used. Don't think so.
Later on he certainly entered the grey zone, with his athletes competiting certainly against the world who was in the red flag zone for sure.
Slaney was rumored to tip her toe into juice land, however briefly, later in the career, as a response to the East Germans and Soviet Block of absolutely rampant PED use. This is no great news, but the point is that the rumors on track street, sniffed that one out. Power athletes of the time were ALL assumed to be on steroids world wide and no big deal what so ever.
The Chinese turtle juice program that produced all the woman's distance records out of the blue, that was the finale and acme of the East German PED program.
So with PEDs, it is warfare.
People like Slaney Decker and Carl Lewis were clean and were the best, but had to juice later on to compete with the junkies.
Contrast Oregon distance running with the Atlas Mountains, Morocco, Algeria, and Spain.
Not one of those world beaters was clean. Not one. and these guys came out of no where as well, to become a global hotspot of "talent".
Still I have Aouita and El G as legit talents. while the Spaniards are all fake to the core.
Also, I disagree with 150 yard discrepancy. The lines were painted in June 1982 and the finish moved up slightly from where Tavern on the green line was at the time. At max, it was probably only 40 to 50 yards short.

And he ran anything but tangents, and on far more Central Park hills than now. I've watched that race maybe 800 times, Salazar ran at least a full marathon.
I remember way back in MA cross country. Salazar was running 14:02 at Franklin Park in High School championships. Roughly 2.93 miles, give or take. You were a very solid runner if you were around 15 mins flat on that rolling course. Mid 15's and you were a great team contributor. He was pretty gifted as a young runner.
Why is it impressive that a morally vacant clown like Salazar ran a fast time in an era when it was super easy to get away with PED abuse? Am I supposed to be impressed by Jarmila Kratochvílová too?

I mean I know nothing, but the fact that the dude tested every possible performance enhancer on his own children to see if it would work is a decent sign that he may have been curious about things like blood doping, steroids, and etc back when he was competing, yes?

No research needed, it is well established history - see for example AAA's decision to ban Salazar - that he used testosterone while an athlete.
No one said, 1980 thru 82. It used to be letsrun's philosophy to call dopers Drug Cheat, and disregard their achievements, see for example Decker being disqualified in the Top American Runner competition here.
Malmo also said here on letsrun that he knew of five doping AW athletes around 1980. That's not exactly a secret (while understandably he won't give us the names, some are quite obvious).
