Nice article. My favorite part was when you wrote “All the talk of Ingebrigtsen being a dominant 10,000 and half-marathon man based on his double threshold training is even more premature.” As if you guys didn’t publish a thread less than 9 months ago asking if Jakob could run 56 minutes for a half-marathon.
It’s always annoying reading your super spike analysis. Super spikes were introduced in 2018. Every pro had access during covid. And in 2024, we’ve seen the biggest jump in times. 2024s time improvements can’t be explained by shoes.
Mo Farah showed that being a DOMINANT championship 5,000 runner and the fastest 5,000 runner are not one in the same. Farah won five straight global 5000 crowns between 2011 and 2016 but never ran faster than 12:53. Only twice was Farah ever the world leader in the 5,000. In 2011, he led the world at 12:53.11 and in 2016 he led it at 12:59.29. In the three other years that he won gold, he was the 11th-fastest man in 2012, 16th-fastest in 2013, and 31st-fastest in 2015.
Come one, don't pretend to be stupid? For someone who didn't watch the sport this sounds like a fair point, but we all know Farah didn't try to run fast and test his limits. Its one of the common complaints about him. Using him to prove anything regarding how fast Jakob can or cant run a 5000m is useless.

Double threshold the JI way does not prepare you for longer distances. You don´t get the stamina required. Canova has said that the most important training for 10k and up is fast continuos runs. Anything slower than 10k pace in the Canova training is done as continuos runs.

Incorrect. Its not the lack of fitness, but muscular adaption. He is not prepared for the effort over that distance. Intervals/tempos is the same fitness wise.
Not only did Mo not test his limits often but few DL races were anywhere near the times they are today. There wasn't much opportunity and when there was opportunity to run fast... he ran 3:28 for 1500. For most of the 2010s it felt like there were 1-2 fast DL 5ks a year and if you weren't in those specific races, good luck running a WL time.
We will accept that and honor that and consider it a mea culpa for the 50 other people on here that were just about guaranteeing a 58:00 or better for him.
I am a huge fan of Jakob's. But just because he says, "I am a half marathoner" and the "1500 is my worst event" doesn’t make it true.
[ Now someday, with proper focus, he still may very well run a very fast half marathon. But that still won't make it his most natural / primary event]

Agree with this. He seemed to be basing it on the fact that he runs 100-120 mpw during his base training. So, maybe during his base phase he could run a good HM. But after doing months of 1500-specific work and racing dozens of times at 1500-5k, to think he could jump into a HM and hang with the WR holder was a bit misguided. I love that he gave it a shot though.
I wouldn't read too much into his half marathon performance. It was a fun challenge for him at the end of the season. If he wanted to take it seriously he wouldn't do it 2 days after winning the DL final 1500m. Someday he will take a serious crack at the distance and historically if you underestimate Jakob you will get proven wrong in a big way

This is what should be the takeaway from Jakob's 1/2. Setting aside his talk and ego, the guy does go out race. Instead of having his agents find a weaker field and get a bunch of appearance fees to be set up to win his first 1/2, Jakob goes out with the best in the world and goes for it.
What I think Jakob did not realize is that the 1/2 has become a specialty race because there is very good prize money and appearance fees and you can run several 1/2s in a year. So, the agents and coaches of the E. Africans have moved a lot of their best talent into the 1/2 and those runners focus their training on that distance. It is not like it was 20+ years ago when most of those running 1/2s were marathoners and 10k runners looking to test their fitness. Most of the field at the major 1/2 races today are runners who spend most of their training working towards running a very fast 1/2 and nothing else.
the guy jacob maybe was good for 27 flat 10 k on the day.
myself, i thought jacob could do 28.00 10k pace most of the way.
was wrong. dead wrong. got carried away.
he was good for 15k at that pace on the day. finito.
the HM, like he said is no joke
anyway, hes half way there on the half.
good to see canova fundamental analysis won the day.
Half way there as he can run near WR pace for the first 10000m? I doubt if rest and specific training will ever result him running that pace 2.2 times 10000.

Do better. Expecting more from you Gault..
Or maybe, just maybe, it's hard to be a great championship racer when your focus is time trialing for times? Oh wait, are you pretending to be stupid? Got me.
Just as I'm about to complain about the umpteenth Jakob thread this week, I see that the actual LR writers started this one. Talk about being part of the problem.

To be fair, I wrote the part on Jakob but I never bought the "Farah didn't try to run fast and test his limits." You think a guy who was capable of going for the WR simply never did it?
Are you joking? I find that to be laughable.
Like he wouldn't want the WR bonuses, the fame, etc.? If Farah got records, he'd be in the discussion for Goat.
