Rojo's hot take on the podcast this week was that Jakob might be able to run 56 something at the San Diego half marathon course Josh Kerr ran 61:51 on.
Sounds crazy but Rojo's logic was Jakob could run 58 minutes to begin with on a normal course. Take 2 minutes off for the downhill nature of this course and you're at 56 minutes.
Of course for drama he threw out the possibility of 55:59 which sounds nuts but the logic is better than I thought when I first heard it. Discussion from pod below:
It is a silly discussion because of course Jakob could probably run a 3:39 mile on a downhill course. So I am not sure how this is news. The real issue is could Jakob run the 58 minute half marathon. Probably but we do not know this yet.
No f---ing way. He's not running 4:16 per mile for 13.1 miles. That's basically two 26:30 10k's back to back

Wow as at first I nearly fell out of my chair when I hear that as I think, “wow, as 56 minutes VERY fast as VERY impossible,” then I listen to the podcast and I think, “wow as NOT impossible, as VERY possible.” As it a fast time jsut as Jakob I VERY fast
Fred Kerley could run 51 minutes then.
This course isn't just downhill and flat, it's down, up, down. It trahses your legs with the fast start and then you have to run uphill. The downhill to the end is nice if the wheels haven't come off.
Monterey Bay, San Jose, and Surf City are the races to run a fast time in CA. I'd bet Kerr had been faster on these even though they aren't net down
The logic is not good. He is not running even 56:59.
If as other posters have said the course has a big downhill but also has a few hills along the way, it does take a toll on the legs so maybe the it's not really 2 minutes off ?

Can Jakob run a 57:29 ? Call me crazy but I think he's not that far off this shape. If Kejelcha and Barega could run a 57:41, I think Jakob can run a 57:40-57:50.
So yea if it's 2 min off, definitely. If it's 30 seconds, probably not but not too far.

30 seconds? It’s still net down 711 feet, and Dillon Maggard ran well under 62. Maybe not 2 minutes but almost certainly 60-90 seconds. Jakob in my eyes could run 58:00-58:30 on a regular course so 57:xx likely here. Kiplimo could run 56 and maybe faster as his World Record wasn’t paced well by him.

When you are well developed, those downhill courses are a matter of how well your joints/muscles can hold up and how fast you are.
I ran a net downhill course at roughly 5:05 pace a few months back when my flat half marathon pace was probably in the 5:30-5:40 pace range. Jakobs Vo2max pace has ought to be around 3:55 per mile pace which is absolutely wild, but imagine running downhill at 5:20 pace when your 3k/32 pace has been around 5:00 per mile, absolutely smooth and you could hold it forever if your mileage was high.
And here we go again with the Jakobmania / Jakobsession ...

Whether we like it or not, thanks for existing Jakob (or thanks to your mother and father… hahaha for creating you in first place) otherwise how would some people create content every single day related to athletics… ?

I’d bet he couldn’t break an hour on any of the NYRR Half Courses.
I would like Jakob to start running track 10ks first. He needs to leave behind the 1500 nonsense. That’s an event for those that can’t sprint but also don’t have great endurance. The 5k/10k double at Paris and LA should be his focus.
I know you guy love Jakob but this is out of his bailiwick.
Lets look at the numbers:
Jacobs 10k PR is from 2019 27:54 that indicates a 1:01:34 Half Marathon.
5000m PR is from 2021 12:48:45 indicates a 58:58 for the Half Marathon.
Jakob is a specialist on the short stuff like 1500 and 3000 meters on track. That's very far away from Half Marathon distance on roads. Sorry 56 minutes will not happen.
Put some of those cheater trampoline shoes on him and 56 seems about right.
