Try different socks? Maybe smoother ones won't cause the same amount of damage.

I just realized that this thread is 11 years old! LOL! I was doing research into this exact same problem, as it has been happening to me for about five years. It doesn't seem to matter the type of shoe for me! I even wear out the heel on the INTERIOR of my: running shoes, dress shoes, golf shoes, hiking boots and work boots. My running shoes wear out faster. I noticed my New Balance attempt also showed me that the ball of the INTERIOR of my shoe was well worn. I have tried locking my heel in with my laces, and it DID make for a more comfortable experience; but still wore out heel. The last pair (Saucony) I ordered a NARROW versus standard. It seems to be helping. The interior heel is notnwearing out as fast. I do believe that you may very well be like me, where a pronated stride is not helping with shoe wear. I hope you have found a solution. It has been 11 years.

guess i should have been clearer...what i meant by INSIDE was not the outside, as in the outside of the shoe as in the part you see. what you cannot see, the inside, in the back where my heel sits, wears out quickly. i do not rub against it excessively and i have no idea what is going on? it's directly behind my heel where it touches my shoe on the INTERIOR! thats the word i should have used!!!
same problems. what I have been doing that seems to help is wearing a large fabric band-aid on both heels. I usually only do this on my long runs. It helps avoid blisters and saves the heel box interior somewhat longer....but mine still tear out. Usually it's late season so these shoes become my sloppy winter runners and a bigger sock makes the tear less noticeable.
Also, don't be lazy and step on your heels to take off the shoes after runs. It will break down the heel counter and cause undue friction thus wearing through the fabric prematurely.
See this with kids shoes all the time.
That's a great point. It's easy to go right from a run into the rest of the day and not get out of those shoes.
I've ordered before and I'm sure I'll order again. I've always been happy doing business with Orthofeet and I have recommended this site many friends. I always love my purchases from orthofeet. It's great to have a place to find shoes that I can wear without pain. Excellent customer service! Also, appreciate free shipping and free returns.(and the coupon that pops up:-) Thank you.
I so much agree with the comment about walking like a duck. I have had this issue my entire life. & I'm 60
I have a very small heel spur - bone growth - which cannot be seen or felt, but will wear through any shoes with soft backs. Just worn through a pair of New Balance trainers after only 6 months. And i don't heel strike!
You probably have a haglunds bump on your heel
