The issue is American runners only care about the American races - namely Boston and New York for the payday. You could work your ass off and travel to Valencia to unlock a spot that will get given to someone else if the trials doesn't go your way. So everyone sits back and hopes they can just run the big pay day American races while someone else travels to unlock a spot.
If they sent top 2 from the trials then the third went to the closest to auto standard in the qualification window it would encourage chasing some proper PRs and not just a safe double digit place in Boston for cash.
The issue is that the 60-80 Kenyan/Ethiopians/etc with the standard did not have to content with Trials... and 95% were not even trying for an Olympic berth so were free to prepare for ***1*** marathon, not three as Teamn USA must do.
Haven't read the whole thread yet but I was worried about this and another negative is one man in those 10 ranked athletes who got kicked out - Tachlowini Gabriyesos - is a refugee athlete who has been named to the team so he might also take a spot meaning more men will have to withdraw in order for Korir to get in
I definitely think 80+Universality/refugee athletes would have been a better option here...
Maybe get your facts right before you start spitting absolute rubbish.
Jordan switched allegiances to represent the heritage of our grandfather and father who are now deceased so i would appreciate if you didn’t speak about my family in a negative light unless you actually understand the facts.
When he switched he unequivocally said he'd only take an Olympic spot if he made it on ranking or time. I wonder if that's changed.
It's all cute because he ever ran fast enough to beat those on the OZ team. Oh and he made the switch after Parsons did, the true motivation is crystal clear. The new Eddie the Eagle is the Maltese Falcon.
2. does anyone really have a rooting interest in Leonard Korir?
Just bummed the US isn't sending three guys. On the global scale the US isn't a bad marathoning nation. It's not a world beater, but it's not bad. It's disappointing that the US can't field a full team of three guys in the Olympic marathon (first time since 2000). Maybe this will light a fire...
If East African nations weren’t limited to 3 athletes each, the US wouldn’t get one.
Does anyone know how many countries have the max 3 runners qualified? it can't be more than 5 or 6 if that
Kenya
Ethiopia
Belgium (Bashir Abdi, Koen Naert, Michael Somers)
China
Eritrea
France
Germany
Great Britain (Emile Cairess, Mahamed Mahamed, Philip Sesemann)
Israel
Italy
Morocco
Spain
Uganda
Japan
Belgium and GBR have only 3 athletes with entry standard. All others have more 3 athletes to choose from.
2 quotas to
Australia
Canada
Netherlands
Norway
Switzerland
Tanzania
USA
1 quota to
Barhain (yes, Kimitai has been suspended for doping. However, his 2023 results have not been canceled. This means those are still valid to earn Barhain a quota. Then Barhain Federation can use any athlete who run below 2:11:30 in the qualification window. And they have Gelelchu and Cheroben)
Bolivia
Brazil
Chile
Djibouti
Guatemala
Lesotho

In the end, Korir would have been an universality spot himself, given that he was the 286th marathoner of the world in 2023 once you remove the limit of 3 athletes per nation; infact, two of the "universality spots" have a PR faster than whatever marathon he's been able to muster in the last five years, and four more of them are in his same ballpark. So yeah there are five guys slower than him that are going to Paris, but in reality given that any of them would be meaningless to the actual race (they will finish 2 miles behind the winner) the universality spot is best served giving a chance to guys from Chad, Virgin Islands, Jordan, Kirghizistan, than another slow American.
Moreover, the 286th best time in the world in 2023 (so equivalent to Korir) was 10"25 for 100 m, 3'39"26 for 1500 m, 4'01"80 for outdoor mile (4'04"96 indoor mile...likely outside of the top 200 of the NCAA), 13'32"08 for 5000 m (dude that made arrived 27th at BU while setting it), so putting things into perspective yeah it may be a bit sad for Korir individually, but in the end it doesn't really matter, we're still speaking about slow guys.
Kyrgyzstan forfaited its universality spot on the Men's Marathon. But no reallocation so far as now it is 70 with entry standard + 10 universality = 80 target number.
