Collegiate middle distance runner at a smaller school, not on the XC travel squad but will do some of the workouts during the fall, split time with the 400m guys when building up. my coach gives us a lot of autonomy in the summer so its basically on us to get our work in and decide how we build up our fitness. I was kicking around the idea of using some very off distance time trials to help break up training and measurably track progress of certain qualities I'm hoping to improve this off season. I'm hoping to see some improvement in top speed and aerobic strength during this block and figure if I can break 9:15 for 3k and run in the 23s for a 200 at around the same time then I'd have done a pretty good job checking both those boxes. I wouldn't taper for these, though I'd probably take the day before the 200m pretty easy, but am still a bit concerned about the possibility of burn out if I technically extend my "racing season" into the summer. do you think this is a smart way to break up training, or should I just focus on getting my workouts in? if it matters, my PRs at relevant distances are 51.9 1:54.7 4:04 (1500) 15:46. never raced a 200m or 3k before.
