Yes. It was very ugly, in many respects, including Avery Brundage insisting "the Games must go on" before the dead were even buried. There have been many chronicles and recollections of this "incident" but one of the best, from an athlete's perspective, is in Kenny Moore's Bowerman and the Men of Oregon. Remember, Moore was 4th in the Marathon that year, as Frank Shorter won. Moore's description of the German police and other forces' ineptitude is damning. The Germans were (are?) still in a pacifist mode after 1945, and they were simply not trained or prepared for anything like this. The police thought they could shoot the Black September terrorists, but all they did was ensure that the hostages were killed in cold blood, and that the terrorists got away. The Israeli Mossad caught up with almost all of them over the next several years, but that is another story. And a good one.

I remember it very well. It was a shocking event that held the world transfixed. Hooded figures with guns on a balcony became an enduring and feared symbol. It was the first time that politics had intruded into sport with such tragic consequences. The attack made the world much more aware of Palestinians, who had largely been secondary to the role played by the Arab states of Egypt and Jordan till then, but it also saw them characterised as "terrorists", which is a label they have never thrown off. It hasn't enable the Palestinians to get any closer to achieving their goals, as we see from the war that goes on in Gaza.

This terrorist attack was pretty tragic. It destroyed the happy, friendly Olympic Games in Munich, Germany.

Atlanta Oly 96 botched the security allowing a terrorist to kill.

Munich was a pretty good film about this event and the aftermath.

It was a very sad couple of day as the events of Munich 1972 played out. I was only 12 years old at the time but I watched as much of it as I could. Unfortunately, the problem is still there and has never been solved.

Intentionally or not, that attack finally stopped Steve Profontaine. Shook him up and he couldn't win anymore.

Yes, it’s hard to say if releasing some of the prisoners may have been a better solution (or something else, I don’t know). The dead athletes probably think so, but that is an impossible position to take.

I remember it well. Back then there was a distinction between good and evil. Most understood that Black September and terrorists like them were bad. Now not so much. I am sure many would celebrate the slaughter.

Europe is so anti-Semitic, after the Holocaust, Europe banished the survivors the Palestine. As of today, Europe still hasn't offered to bring back the descendants to Europe, pay compensations, etc.

Your context starts about 30 years too late. The group that later started calling themselves Palestinian was already carrying out terrorism against Jews in 1920.

It's also silly to claim the extreme left was being imprisoned in WW2. The only group to the left of the nazis were the bolsheviks and the only group the nazis hated more than they hated the bolsheviks were the capitalists who they felt the Jews were an embodiment of.
