I don't know exactly why I was thinking of this, but I realized today that I actually knew pretty much nothing about this. Other than the fact that a Palestinan group killed 11 Israel athletes. That was the extent of my knowledge. I'm pretty sure that I am not the only one who does not know the actual story.
Context:
In May, 1948 (only 24 years earlier), Israel was officially established as a State for the Jewish people
The terrorist group in question was called Black September (emerged in the aftermath of 1967 Arab-Israeli War: unrelated) and were demanding the release of over 200 Palestinians imprisoned in Israel and 2 German radicals (part of RAF - an extreme left wing organization), imprisoned in Germany. The prisoners were not released.
The 11 athletes were actually a combination of athletes, coaches and officials
At least one of them (Yakov Springer, 51, who was a wrestling referee) was a concentration camp survivor.
Weird to think that most of them were alive during WW2. It may have been the first time that they returned to Germany since then. The irony is that they survived WW2 and were finally murdered in Germany.
...52 years later, it does not seem that there was any forward progress on this issue.
...same battle. Except that extreme left wing people are not being imprisoned in Germany anymore.
