Yes he was. Nutrition and “new training” are overrated.
The stupid shoes have artificially boosted the performance of current runners.

Pre had a good coach in Walt McClure. The outlined program I saw was very well constructed, following date pace to goal for specific sessions around 800m to 3200m paces.
An athlete with a diet bad enough to affect his performances is an outlier and fruits and vegetables existed in the ‘60s. Pre undoubtedly ate enough meat for protein and had no problem consuming enough carbs.
It’s odd that so many posters believe that people decades ago were morons when it came to their diets.
