Stephens just won the 10000m at Penn Relays as a true freshman. She has been very overlooked but with very steady progression, she may be just as good as Valby by senior year.

Really nice result for her. Good to see Kelsey back
This is true for everyone but not likely for anyone. She has 2:19 to drop to match Valby’s 10k time. 15:50 + 33:09 are definitely nice for a true freshman though.
Give the true freshman a break! Every good result doesn’t need to be compared to the future Paris gold medalist.
Baloga ran 15:56 as a true freshman. Doesn’t mean she could beat 14:53 by her senior year. Stop putting unfair expectations!
Nevertheless good result for Stephens but inline with her 5k times.
Using your logic, your true freshman Emma Hadley of your Cu buffs ran2:14 in the 800m. “Nice result, is she the next mikaela rose of LSU and break 2:00”!
Wow, Leah and Kelsey were pacing very evenly throughout that entire race. That’s a great sign!
Nice result for Stephens but her Wolfpack teammate, sophomore Grace Hartman, ran about 42 seconds faster about a month ago to win the Raleigh Relays.
She could be as good as Valby by senior year but then again, she may not be. There are others that could be as good as Valby also. Valby is pretty special, though, so it’s going to take someone else that is special to be as good as her. Those athletes are not that plentiful and you never know how one is going to develop, what injuries they may have, etc. You can speculate but don’t get your hopes up.
quick glance through tfrrs performance lists from the last 3 years and i dont see any true freshman faster than her over the last 3 years over 10k. Tough race to transition into that early. Shoutout to Stephens and Paityn Noe (33:11 this year) for their great 10ks.
Dont let the OP's silly comparison to Valby let you overlook a good performance.
this is the right take. Even better as it followed a 1500 earlier and she lead the entire race as the original intent was for her to pace Chmiel.
Yes Id never seen so much turning around in my life. There were times she had her head turned directly around for seconds at a time and you could see she was talking to Kelsey. Im curious what the dialogue was exactly. I imagine "Im finishing! Im not dropping! Kelsey!! Come on!! Stick with me!! Ok see you at the finish!" lol. I say this before watching this video so maybe she explains it more in that.
As for "very overlooked" many of us were trying to say how good Leah was dating back to high school. Of course you dont know what her 10K potential was but she was really good by her senior year and improving quickly over the course of that season. Spare me the gratuitous Valby comparison though. Let her be herself and develop as she will.
Winner of the 5000m, 20 yr-old Beerman has dropped over a minute off her PB over the past year, but when 21yr old Valby dropped less than 30seconds off her PB in two years, there have bee endless drug accusations on this forum from the bully Armstronglivs and his buddy astro.
In the history of women’s NCAA distance running, no one has been just as good as Valby by their senior year.
Not another delusional poster. One good race that gives her a regional qual and you’re comparing her to Valby. Stop it! She’s a top50 runner. Geez.
Reread the post, bright boy. Geez.

Stephens response at the 52s mark is precious.
interviewer: what does 33:09 mean to you?
Stephens: “I have no idea what that time means” totally honest and funny.
This is a bit like the Ky Robinson 5k 10k race day.
It looks like she planned on doing a double threshold 🤔, pace Napoleon in 1500, then come back to pace Chmiel for 8k.
But then continued on. There's nothing more to read into this.
She was a well known highly rated recruit, who just switched last minute to nc state, due a coaching change. She had a strong xc season, was injured for indoor, and now running comparable to xc. (Pretty weak field at Penn except Chmiel)
You'll get a better read on her at acc/NCAA and in her 2nd xc season.
Did she show the sudden ability to run record breaking times, the odd ability to achieve peak fitness quickly after repeated injuries without the normal setbacks the every other college athlete experiences, the conspicuous absence of natural fatigue, such as we saw at NCAA indoors, all of which people on here gaspingly try to explain by pretending said athlete discovered cross training or is another sudden magical unicorn talent? Does she train with her team does her coach even have a clue how she trains and what she is doing? Because then I might take notice.
There was no “sudden ability” to run record times. Do you think sophomore Maddy Elmore who just knocked almost a minute off her PB in a just one year, to take down the University of Oregon’s 34 yr-old 5000m record displayed “sudden ability”??
Well for one thing Elmore is not a sophomore… she graduated HS in 2020 so has been training as a collegiate athlete for 4 years albeit w injuries - she was a stud way back in middle school as an 800 specialist so has natural speed.
