I lifted for 5 years (not this routine) before getting back into running more seriously. I found it added about 5-8 pounds of muscle to my frame.
Right now I just lift for injury protection which is much simpler - nordic curls, slow eccentric RDLs, bodyweight squats, and 3 kinds of upper body presses with dumbells. I prefer high reps low weights - but I think higher weights low reps might be better for strength.
Symmonds did say that the thing that made the most difference in his 2012 olympic final was weightlifting.
