You do realize that most high schools just hire whatever teacher in the school wants the extra income, right? They may invest the time in hiring a football or boys basketball coach from outside the district and then create a teaching position for them but generally all other coaches are just hires within the district. A current teacher in the school with absolutely zero running experience would have a better chance of getting hired as the school's cross country coach than Mike Smith in almost all cases.
