I believe she had just set the collegiate record running 32:34 at the Penn Relays. Her 5000 pr was 16:04

My older cousin was a freshman in high school with Kathy back in the 1980s when she was eitherba junior or senior. She was one of the first few female elites in NC on the heels of Julie and Mary Shea. Think she ran about 2:15, 4:51, maybe mid 10:00s in high school. Low 18s in cross? You can look it up on ncpreptrack.org under all time NC lists. My cousin trained with her at times as she would workout with boys. He was the first person who told me of this story back in the mid 1990s when I started running. I think their high school, Richmond Senior in Rockingham, NC, had a cinder or packed dirt track at that time. Could be wrong on that but I think that's what he told me.
My bad. It's ncpreptrack.com.
I was at that meet. I almost won the 1500 but 5 guys beat me.
kathy was the 10k collegiate record holder at the time BUT it was the first time contesting the event at the NCAA. everyone knew Stephanie Herbst from Wisco was the heavy favorite, not Kathy.
3 girls pulled away, Kathy, Stephanie and a girl from OK state. Down the backstretch about half way done Kathy moved wide from the group of 3 and actually accelerated off the track and ran out the stadium. About an hour later the NC State girls came by our group and asked us if we had seem Kathy. Then the next morning at Breakfast we heard the news. So sad.
we had a guy in the 10K the next day. He had mono. Coach told him to just run and drop out. He actually finished in like 33 minutes because he was sure if he dropped out there would be people following and monitoring him all night.
The book Silence of Great Distance really is a very underrated running book in my opinion, there's some fascinating history in there, especially surrounding Mary Decker, Zola Budd, and the Soviet runners at that time. The Ormsby story is really captivating but obviously really tragic as well. It talks about a lot of issues she had preceding this incident where she would black out in races or have major respiration problems, and speculated she might've had an underlying heart issue or something along those lines. The way she describes her run off the track to the bridge is that it was completely unplanned, unintended, and was this total out of body experience where she doesn't even remember doing any of it (this tiny woman somehow got over a 7 or 8 foot fence en route to the bridge). I'm glad she's since gone on to do great things with her life. On another note, it's easy to forget how incredibly fast and talented these kids were back then in the days well before super spikes, tech clothing, and smartwatches. Anyway, it's a solid read.
I remember. Cathy… can’t remember
This is a similar one I remember, seems to have been a trend in the 80s

Here's something to help you understand. Read it and I expect a report on my desk by Friday.

You silly child, sometimes there are no answers. You are a dangerous person to be suggesting that every suicide is due to an outside situation. Most are due to something that needs to be clinically diagnosed. Even gun rights proponents have addressed the need for better mental health care.
How about Suzy Favor? She deliberately fell in the Oly final because she knew she couldn't win, then became a call girl. Her brother sadly, did commit suicide.
Is that a sports illustrated link with a marloboro cigarette ad? Man the 80’s were wild. Great music.
