That guy Chris van Tulleken is a fear mongerer who has overplayed the UPF hand. The term is not well defined and none of the chemical food additives commonly used in processed foods are poison, on the contrary, they are FDA approved and haven’t shown to have ill effects. It’s always probably good to be cautious but additives like soy lecithin, maltodextrin, potassium sorbate, xantham gum etc., while not grandma-compliant, are not poisonous either. As far as we know, they make food more palatable or longer lived and are broken down by the body or just pooped out.

All that matters is caloric modesty and nutritional diversity of food intake.

The least obese nations are in Africa and Asia. The most obese are in the South Pacific. Spam and Reese’s are bad. Food insecurity is good. We’ve got to stop subsidizing Big Ag through farm subsidies and food stamps and allow for a little starvation.

There are people who are legitimately addicted to food, but this is just pandering to fatties with no self control.

I have a food addition. I could eat a large pizza no problem. 6 donuts? I can breathe it in before I notice it.

However I run and exercise and burn it all off.

So whom is lazy and not lazy?

I know you're making fun, but binge eating can absolutely be a disorder like an addiction. When I experienced a traumatic event I fell into binge eating, and went from a skinny runner on the verge of underweight to in the overweight range in only several months. I didn't even enjoy the food 90% of the time. I even ate things I didn't like, ate til I felt sick because it numbed my mind and gave me a distraction from the pain I was feeling. I completely recovered, but that time was like being in the throes of addiction.

So thinking you are male while actually being female is sane bahvior, but eating too much delicious food is a mental disorder.

If you’re looking to feel superior to others, and you’re skinny (like a runner perhaps), then fat people tend to make easy targets.

It’s not either-or: one can have a food addiction, and also be lazy.

I have a “food addiction” and I’m not lazy, therefore I am not fat. I have special relationships with both food, and activity.😁

ANYONE who is fat is “lazy” relative to their caloric intake. Nobody starving was ever fat at the same time.

3 years ago I would have completely disagreed with you. Then my second child was born. My two kids get fed exactly the same food and we treat food in the same way with both of them, eg, we don’t use sweets as a reward. I can honestly say my now 3 year old has a good addiction. If we’re not paying attention the fridge door will be open and that kid will be hunting for food. Climbing on the counter to get into top cupboards to look for something to eat is nothing. The older one doesn’t do the same stuff and never has.

food addiction is real, but mostly manageable. and enabling behavior, like our gov't and some bad parenting makes it a lot worse than it should be.

Food addicts are the same as alcohol or drug addicts: they are trying to self-medicate their way out of underlying mental health issues. This isn't about laziness. It's about depression, boredom, self-worth, self-esteem, etc. Society exacerbates the issues by advertising food as a reward and a celebration. Food processors alter it so much with ingredients known to cause reliance on dopamine and oxytocin spikes - you crave it, you need it, and your brain demands it.

Obesity is an addiction crisis. Corporate America makes a lot of money selling you addictive food along with weight loss supplements, gym memberships, workout gear, plus size clothing, and medical care. America is a nation of addicts and the pushers own the government.

It’s all the fault of greedy Chinese corporations using AI to make food more addictive in order to weaken the American military.

Food addiction is very powerful!

I'm middle-aged & have been battling food addiction for several years now.

Very tough to keep my weight down & stay around 20% BF.

Despite working out 7 days a week (gym rat), food addiction is still strong. 😕

Lots of people are lazy. One subset consists of people who think “whom” is a subject.

(of course, not all who know “whom” is an object are not lazy; many, in fact, are lazy people of at least average intelligence who can infer simple aspects of language with hardly any effort).
