I can’t decide if you are a deep state plant, and MSNBC plant or just a plant.
It briefly gets dark. whoa
It's an incredible experience of you ever get to experience. It takes a lot of effort and is incredibly boring for the hours leading up to it. ...but that boring time is still 1000x more exciting than watching a 10k track race.
To me, the last one was an incredible let down. I would rate dozens of events in my life that were far more of "an experience".
The main problem facing astronomers is there's no business case to justify their salaries. There's no marketable product. They're totally dependent on donations from the public and private sector to survive. So, they have to hype up public interest in everything they do.
For example, take those pretty colorized images you see from the Hubble Space Telescope. The colorized part is almost complete fiction. The real image is basically a monochromatic (black and white) image. They artificially colorize them based on the presence of various molecules to make everyone say "wow".
But the eclipse is none of that. It's just an event that's pretty cool to watch.
I live in Texas, and am amazed at how the local media is going BANANAS over this eclipse. It's been a lead story for at least a month. Hotel rooms are selling out, they're issuing traffic warnings, people are taking their kids out of school for the day, and businesses are being urged to allow employees to work from home for the day to lessen the traffic impact.
I would have thought the same as many of the people here that don't get it until the total eclipse here in 2017. I had seen an annular solar eclipse when I was in middle school in the '90s. You have to use the special glasses/viewers for that because that sun is never completely blocked out. That was kind of cool but not a big deal at all.
I didn't understand the hype behind the total eclipse until I saw it. Some of you may not understand the difference between a partial eclipse, annular eclipse, and total eclipse. I would say it is not worth it to worry about viewing any of them other than the total eclipse. If you are in an area that is 99%, it is not worth it. You need to go to an area that is in the path of the total eclipse. When the moon completely blocks the sun and you can look at it with your naked eyes, it is one of the most amazing things that I have ever seen in my life. If you have not seen that, then you will not understand. If you have viewed partial or annular eclipses through the glasses/viewers, you will not understand. You have to look at a total eclipse with your naked eyes to understand.
The reason for the hype is also because of how rare it is to have a total solar eclipse over the USA (or any specific location for that matter). This is only the 2nd total eclipse over the USA in my lifetime and the next one won't occur for 20 more years. Also, the 2017/2024 eclipses have occurred over quite large swaths of the country as well. Many people will have opportunities to view them. I am glad I got to see the one in 2017. I won't be able to go see the one this time, but I plan on trying to watch one in 2044/2045 when I will be retired!
You have to look at a total eclipse with your naked eyes to understand.
that's it! It gets you.
I'm almost considering dropping everything and going to see this one, if it's 20 years until the next.
There are people that travel the globe for them
The good news is that wealth has gotten to the point that that is possible. In the past only scientists who could get funding from royalty could go. I have several friends who are driving or flying to Texas to see the eclipse. Not something that I care to do, but then I have hobbies and interests that they don't share.
I think it's Big Eclipse Glasses trying to convince us to buy their leftover glasses from 2017. Sheeple!
If you've ever experienced a total eclipse you'd know that when the sun is fully eclipsed you don't need the glasses! ....before and after is a different matter though!
Eclipses are only special if your are in the 100% zone ... partial is very much a nothing burger
Why all the press about an eclipse? They happen all the time and this isn’t 700 BC where we think it’s an angry God expressing his/her wrath. There is NOTHING scientific to be learn. The moon goes in front of the sun, big deal. I understand little towns trying to make hay here, but why is the media and government shoving this down our throats? Where is the money coming from and going to?
These astrophysics bigwigs are just pushing their deep state agenda on us to steal govt money and push their agenda
it's when it goes total that the world turns eerie and your mind is blown. Total ones are pretty rare and you have to travel to see them.
If you haven't seen a total, you don't know. Once you have, you are one of us.
It totally makes sense to have a religion where you stab out someone's heart during a total eclipse. It's one of the most naturally awe-inspiring events there is. Right up there with an explosive volcanic eruption, which also gets religions based on it.
