I see a lot of hand waving, but no actual numbers except how big the ship is. Which alone hardly argues for collision being an acceptable risk over time.
Port commerce is seriously set back. Was that included in the CBA? This was critical infrastructure, not just any old bridge.
Would bridges be crumbling so fast if they had been built stronger? When they were built, did the CBA not figure in future maintenance?
This wasn't a maintenance issue on the bridge. Also no bridge can go without maintenance
I am slightly surprised there weren't pier protective things, those cost $100 million thought.
Didn't we have an infrastructure bill during Obama's time to repair all the bridges?
These Things Take Time Back in 2009, former President Barack Obama made some lofty promises about the infrastructure overhaul that his $800 billion economic stimulus plan would provide. Obama used the phrase “shovel-ready projects” in reference to construction projects that could begin right away. In the end, however, only $98.3 billion of the $800 billion stimulus was dedicated to transportation and infrastructure. Of that $98.3 billion, only about $27.5 billion was actually spent on transportation infrastructure projects. Why? “The problem is that spending it out takes a long time, because there’s really nothing – there’s no such thing as shovel-ready projects,” Obama said in a 2010 interview with the New York Times.
Bad news: A 600 million dollar bridge collapsed killing 6 innocent, hardworking people and turning an already struggling US city into a parking lot for the next year.
Good news: They don't have to worry about fixing those potholes anymore!
Rescue efforts? They have been in the water 20 hours. They are probably dead you idiot. Was that a racist bridge you idiot? Go pretend nurse your baby.

I believe a poster in another now deleted thread did indeed state the bridge is racist.
I was about half a mile from the I35 Bridge in Minneapolis when it collapsed. Within a week local officials were sorting through bids from contractors, and within just a few weeks up to 400 workers per shift were going 24/7 to build the replacement bridge. It ultimately was open about 3 months ahead of what was already a wildly accelerated construction timeline.
I suspect we’ll see some similar replacement schedule in Baltimore.

I watched some of the livestream, and I think it must have been a mechanical failure/maintenance issue on the ship. At around 1:23am, the ship's lights blinked out as it was approaching the bridge. Then the lights came back on for a while, then back off, all the while heading towards the pylon. It hit the pylon at 1:28:44 am.
During the five minutes I watched, I could see vehicles crossing the bridge. There were no headlights moving across the bridge when it collapsed, so it could have been worse. There was a crew on the bridge doing concrete work on the decking though, so those are probably the people that went into the water. I didn't watch beyond the collapse to see if any vehicles sailed off the edge after it collapsed. Hopefully not, but it's very possible that vehicles coming through later might not notice anything until they are suddenly dropping off the edge.
just watched the live stream.
the ship clearly blacks out a few minutes before hitting. you can see the main engines restart, probably in hard astern. she may black out again just before hitting. the wind was such to blow her into the pylon if the lost steerage (coming from port bow).
why did she blackout? normally generator failure, but she should have been running 2 out of 3 in synch.
Overload? why? Preferential trips should protect systems.
cyber attack - one for the conspiracy theorists.
I am impressed she started again so fast after a blackout. i have blacked out container ships and its taken hours to start going again. rumours of a mayday before hitting allowing some semblance of reaction.....
Tug captains in the us are going to be rubbing their hands in glee - no more leaving harbour under bridges wtiut tug escort.
Oh, and the captin will be under arrest by now.
to be fair, if she blacked out, as seems obvious, the chief engineer will be joining him. be interesting to see if they were on duty for port departure at that time in the morning - they should have been, but....
It appears the power plant was lost. Nothing the pilot can do there. Generator would have kicked in but probably not enough help. That pilot was certainly drug tested but almost certainly not under arrest. Full investigation now. He may well be cleared.
He would have called on radio reporting the problem so that bridge could be cleared, dropped anchor (which would do no good; it would simply be dragged by the weight), try to reverse engine (you could see the smoke when he tried this) but that would not help, then brace for impact. If he had any rudder at all the ship would possibly have glanced the support. The head on collision says that steering was gone.

Minnesota had a Republican governor in 2007 and W was president. They got that bridge rebuilt in a year with clever contracting and incentives. In the 1994 Northridge, California earthquake, they rebuilt I-10 in three months under Pete Wilson.

Let's see how Biden/Buttigeig/Moore do...
How did Democrat governor Josh Shapiro do replacing the section of I-95 in Philly that collapsed last year?

Gotta love the LetsRun logic here. There have been numerous maritime disasters over the years that were 100% the captain's fault... Titanic, Exxon Valdez, Costa Concordia. Somehow those disasters were only blamed on the individual and not white men in general.
And yet here we have a situation where the captain is probably not at fault (harbor pilot in control, ship lost power), and the LetsRunners are speculating that IF a woman or minority was the captain, then surely that indicates all women/minorities are inferior captains! And of course if the captain and/or pilot does turn out to be a white male and is to blame for the crash, nothing to see here, that's just a failure of that particular individual.

"where the captain is probably not at fault." That is speculation too.
It would be very helpful if this investigation has full public transparency. Who/what was at fault? Will the lead investigator take open questions in a public forum? Does the public believe those answers? Faith in our government institutions is at an all-time low given the lies and coverups we've experienced with virtually every other major incident. It would be good for America if this situation ends up being different.
False assumption that affirmative action beneficiary means not qualified.
When you are considering affirmative action candidates you are not looking for the best qualified. Agree? You are selecting by race not qualificiations.
No Sally. We have an excess of qualified individuals for most positions and jobs. You seem to thing AA is like a running race where they simply ignore the winner and hand a medal to the first lady or brown person or whoever your boogie man is. Freakin' people. What is wrong with us?
