Not sure of it's per design that hitting one of the pillars can bring down the entire bridge.
Clearly it is, as the bridge came down. But if you understand how truss bridges work, you would understand why the entire bridge was lost. This bridge is over 1.5 miles long and the stresses on it when it worked were immense and well balanced.
In passing, there is something seriously wrong on letsrun if 2 out of the first 4 posts about this had to be removed.
What is it with these blue city bridges?
Amazing 2 people actually survived.
This is terrifying and will have severe ramifications beyond those poor souls killed in the accident. They are the priority, but a major port has been shut down for the foreseeable future and I cannot even imagine the traffic issues this will cause throughout MD and even the NCR.
On another note, this was surely being piloted by a local harbor captain who could do this in his sleep. I would be very surprised if a Maersk ship was not properly maintained. I am worried this is the result of a cyber-attack on Maersk, but I hope that I am wrong.
This is the stuff of nightmares. Prayers to all of the people who were involved or know someone involved. Horrible.

I heard in the news that it was not a Maersk ship. Just carrying Maersk containers.
NY Post (yes, it's a rag) had video of the ship losing power twice in the 5 or so minutes leading up to it hitting the pillar and bridge collapse.
It also reported that the ship relayed to MDOT the likely-hood of a collision. I don't know the timing on how quickly/ahead of time this was done.
I have no idea why your post illicited so many downvotes. I mean, you’re only reporting the news.
THE FRANCIS SCOTT KEY BRIDGE GOES HOME DEVASTATED!!!!!!!

The ship is less than 10 years old. There should be no maintenance issues with it at this stage.
It's also sailing under Singaporean flag, a rich developed country that doesn't skimp on security.
