Gary "Laz" Cantrell enjoys a good cackle (or three) when discussing the fact that no woman has ever finished the 100-mile Barkley Marathons (the world's hard...
How come you never quoted him at the end of the vid when he says he'd be happy and thrilled and excited when a woman does finish, so he cant say that a woman cant do it any more?

I was just hoping people would watch the video !
Laz has a sardonic way of speaking, but I'm sure he's very happy man today. And he should be getting a tattoo.
what gesture of kindness from Jared? i missed it - thx
He let Jasmine choose the direction she wanted to run on the final loop
To expand on this a little. Both Jared and John have said they feel that going clockwise for the 5th loop is a little easier. I believe (and correct me if I'm wrong) is it's because the heavier climbs are at the beginning of the loop in that direction and you only have 2 major climbs after the "Fire Tower".
The first person to start loop 5 gets to dictate the direction of their 5th loop. All subsequent 5th loop starters must go opposite directions. Jared and Paris had been together all day and Jared gave Jasmine the choice as a measure of good sportsmanship (and the fact he already had 3 finishes). She chose clockwise meaning he had to go CCW. Ironically despite her taking the "easier" way, he beat her to the finish.
An amazing performance for sure and the pics of her at the gate are awesome to see. You see and feel her absolute exhaustion

I don't usually care about ultras, but I agree that this is a black page. It involves running and it involves someone doing something previously considered impossible. That is enough imo.
I'd like to say that one thing I find truly fascinating about this race is how guys like Jared and John, each with multiple finishes at Barkley still barely manage to finish. Like when you think about...John with 2 finishes (now 3) and Jared with 3 (now 4) and it still not only takes them 59+ of the 60 hours but literally they do a 13 hour last "20 Mile" loop...in the daylight.
I'm sure some of their overall time is a bit inflated because at this point, they are really helping the other runners to complete their loops and using their course knowledge. At the same time, both of them have done it "on their own" the second time they finished and their finish time was nearly the same as it was both being a follower and leading the followers.
I've got at what point on the 5th loop they know they have it "in the bag" time wise and it simply becomes a "do nothing stupid like roll your ankle or miss a book" type mentality and that is also the reason they are so close to the cutoff.

laz makes the course longer each time someone completes it too
Just here to make my annual post about how this race is stupid and nothing more than an event to stroke Laz's ego.
No need to reply, I don't care. Enjoy it if you want to, but that doesn't make it any less stupid.
Roping in the haters? Mission Accomplished with starting this thread!
I used to think this event was stupid until I realized it's not a race or run. It's basically just an ultra adventure survival run/hike.
That is the big issue. It stress a bunch of skills that are far different than most of us consider racing as some of the obstacles to completion feel a bit more random than skill based.
