She's one of a few very talented runners. Other than a few trolls, I don't think anyone really thought her talent was so far above and beyond everyone else's. She had her moments and may have them again in the future. But this is Valby's time right now. Maybe it will flop in the not too distant because of injuries or life circumstances.
Tuohy still has the 3000 record. she severely underperformed in the 5000. and has seemingly not been well for 10 months to a year. im not saying it's the coaching. nc state is a great program. but time for KT to move on. look at how much Henes improved after leaving her own mother.
Tuohy is the most suspicious runner that has been mentioned in this thread. Her musculature is unnatural for a distance runner. She has never been tested. She has had some odd rough patches where her and her coach try to claim sickness and tiredness. Now she disappears when she turns pro. Her accomplishments will go down in history with a huge dark cloud over them when she does nothing as a pro.
She still has the 5000 outdoor, 3000m, mile and indoor 1500 ncaa records. Her 5000m race was an underperformance due to fatigue (needs more arc trainer apparently), but 15:03 was still an excellent time that bodes very well for the future.

I wouldn’t doubt that Tuohy has a better summer/trials than Valby. It is really hard to maintain the kind of level Valby is on right now. This will reignite the Tuohy v. Valby debate.
Valby has otherworldly talent and is incredibly marketable, but she’s a rube. Tuohy is just so much more into the sport, aware of what it takes to be a professional, and dedicated to the process.
I wouldn’t doubt that Tuohy ends up making more teams and has a long B-level career whereas Valby is more likely to be a flash in the pan—-even though she’s the much more talented runner.

This is not a new story.
was it a mistake for tuohy to put so much focus into the 1500 last spring, possibly at the expense of her strength?
there is a very fine line where you work to maintain your strengths, while focusing on improving your relative weaknesses.
Not specifically replying to this poster, but going by the negativity toward Touhy you'd think she's quit the sport. Are you all so willing to give up on such a talent?! I fully understand that other young women have run quicker (or won Olympic golds), but so what? You can still admire and root for Touhy, can't you? I really enjoy a good race and her come from behind X-country victory was so entertaining and inspiring that I hope she's involved in many more battles (win or lose).
Nobody is negative. Everyone likes her. People are merely expressing their opinions. I predict that Trump will win. You may predict that Biden will win. I am voting for Biden and you may be voting for Trump. Predictions may have nothing to do with positivity or negativity.

I agree. Should have gone to Mike Smith in Flagstaff, to altitude. Start doubling, mix it up. Even Smith credits the altitude with helping his team. Instead Tuohy bought a house in Raleigh and posts about NC State. If it makes her happy so be it, but she is a pro now....

Counterpoint: Coach Henes took someone who Never had the Makings of a High School Varsity Athlete and helped her turn into a multiple NCAA champ and NCAA record holder. Coach Henes is a genius!
How about we let her start her pro career first? What a concept. And she is a pro now? Ok. This is not exactly a lucrative field outside on the top sprinters. She was smart to move to NC; NY is simply not affordable or even worth it anymore. I still say her ultimate destination is a D1 college coach, possibly at NCst when Henes retires. Which will place her better off than virtually all US distance runners.
Anyway, no reason to rush. Again her ncaa records are very formidible. The 3000m record especially so. Not even Valby can beat that one, and she tried twice. And a worn out 15:03 already promises a sub-15. Chances are with all the 14:40s and the top US pros still active she and Valby won't qualify this coming cycle. And it will be a farce in the 5000m anyway. The Kenyans and Ethiopians are not going to treat the Olympics lightly light indoors. Haylom will magically become a 3:54 runner again, etc. Just needs to build slow and steady and ignore this board.
