I was sitting in the stands after kicking the ninth person out of my seat at the conspicuously named Track at New Balance last night, watching the Womens 3k final. Arkansas currently had a 15 point lead over Florida going into this event, with Florida having Valby and Asekol in the 3k and Arkansas having one of the best seeded 4x400s. Valby was obviously the favorite to take the win in the 3k, and with Asekol for additional points, there was a shot for the Gators to overtake the team lead with Asekol getting 2nd or 3rd. Assuming no score from Arkansas in the 4x400, Florida will have won the title. But unfortunately, the Florida team pulled Asekol after about 800m, as if Valby really needed a teammate to rabbit for her to win, which she promptly does. With Asekol stepping off the track and Valby winning, the team scores going into the 4x400 were 55-Arkansas and 50-Florida. As many expected, Arkansas outpaced South Carolina to win the 4x400. However, as Im sure most fans were not expecting, the opening Arkansas leg broke in too early, DQing the strong team performance. Thus, the final team score was 55-Arkansas and 50-Florida. Now, I understand it was a tall ask to have Asekol podium, given she wouldve had to PB by 2+ seconds, but its NCAAs and you are stealing that opportunity from the athlete. At the end of the meet, Florida left enough positions on the table that they could have won the team title if they gave Asekol a chance to finish.
