Well, in the DMR which is obviously before the 3K next day but only 40 minutes after the 5? I would presume that NAU will sub for Young, I do not see anyway you can be that effective after a 5K on a banging anchor. I know its been done. Same with Wolfe? Who is not nearly as good as Young..why the tripling..or maybe they sub..I think you can sub 0ne for the line up that ran the Q mark? I even think asking Sahlman for a mile Q, then a 12..then another mile next day against really good guys if he made final is a big ask. Wolfe? Is he really running a 5K vs Young..then a DMR anchor..or maybe they swap he and Strand? and then a 3K? Not sure that ends well either.
Guess I misread the results on his World Athletics page. I assumed they grouped the semis together, and he finished 13th overall. Still, the fact he made it through that killer first round puts him a level above the rest of the field. Waskom was also there and couldn't do the same. I also just like him as an athlete and it's rare to see a guy run 3:31 and come back to help his college team out the next year. I hope they run him on the 1200 again for the DMR though, keep him as fresh as possible (he might break the unofficial CR for that distance tbh). It's a fantastic field though, four guys at 3:48-3:51 ability level (conversions included) is ridiculous for the NCAA.
Not to be a d*ck but he was DFL in his Worlds semi finishing 4 seconds off the back. Could not have been further from making the final for a semi finalist.
I’d say he’s probably third favorite behind Houser and Waskom, but he certainly should be considered a good contender. Essayi doing World Indoors and such seems like a lot. And to me tactically he struggles at his size without the burst/shiftiness that a Manzano had for instance. But maybe he gets it right this year.

"fresh as possible for DMR"? A nice thought, but even if prelims are slow and tactical, guys will be running so fast and hard, plus the bumping, it will be different than most prelims we have seen, I think, these guys will be on two weeks, no racing, and ready to bang, coming in. You do get two hours between Mile Prelims and DMR , I just think folks will have to go deep to make that Mile final.
Glad to see Khan made it. His kick is as good or better than anybody else in the final. If a tactical race with everybody sitting and kicking there will be a cluster finish that anyone can win. The fastest milers should just go for a fast time from the start and avoid the traffic jams.
I do think the superspikes make a huge difference as far as how guys will bounce back on day 2. Day 1 I agree with you that the DMR will be heavily impacted by guys who run qualifying races. Does that help OK State the most?

Fresh as possible for the mile the next day, not the DMR. Mile/1200/Mile is a slightly easily triple than Mile/1600/Mile.

It's very hard to predict. Lots of different scenarios depending upon how the first two laps go. Do they go out at an honest pace or do they sit back and run the first half in 2:05?

I don’t think Essayi will let the pace go slow after getting kicked down at sec’s. I also feel like troutner and bons might work together.
